Abstract: Magnetism Aided Machining (MAM) comprises a number of relatively new industrial machining (firstly finishing and surface improving) processes being developed at the present time too. MAM is effective - among others - in polishing, deburring and burnishing of metal parts. The authors give a brief outline of these modern processes, and make an attempt to systematize them. The paper summarizes the results of the experimental research work carried out by the authors mainly in field of magnetism-aided abrasive machining and roller burnishing in finishing and deburring operations.

TL;DR: In this article, a finite element model was developed to evaluate the analytical results of a study of minimizing the surface roughness based on the experimental work, and a high carbon high chromium roller was used as a tool for the burnishing process.
Abstract: Surface finish is an important factor in creating the durable metal components, and fatigue strength can be improved if compressive residual stresses are produced in the surface. Burnishing is a finishing process and compressive residual stresses are induced during the process. The present study of minimizing the surface roughness based on the experimental work, and finite element model was developed to evaluate the analytical results. Commercial purity Mild Steel and Aluminium were selected as work specimens and a high carbon high chromium roller was used as a tool for the burnishing process.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a roller burnishing tool which can round the corner portion of a workpiece by turning the tool beside turning the workpiece, and a mechanism for adjusting the machining diameter of the tool by moving the roller along the recessed portion 12a formed on the mandrel 12 by receding the retainer by pushing the roller 5 against the portion to be rounded.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roller burnishing tool which can round the corner portion of a workpiece by turning the tool beside turning the workpiece. SOLUTION: The roller burnishing tool comprises a roller 5, a shank 3, a retainer 6 for retaining the roller so as to rotate and move to the preset tilting direction, mandrels 12, 14 which hold the retainer 6 so as to rotate and axially slide and are provided with an approximately chevron shape recessed portion 12a formed to retain the roller 5, and a first energizing means 10 for energizing the retainer 6 in the forward direction of the tool. The roller burnishing tool further comprises a mechanism for adjusting the machining diameter of the tool by moving the roller 5 along the recessed portion 12a formed on the mandrel 12 by receding the retainer by pushing the roller 5 against the portion to be rounded. TL;DR: In this paper, a common rail with high durability is constructed by a roller burnishing to suppress the advancement of internal fatigue so as to increase an internal fatigue strength, and the inner peripheral surface of the flow passage is finished by roller burning.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a common rail with high durability by providing a compressive residual stress to the inner peripheral surface of a flow passage by a roller burnishing to suppress the advancement of internal fatigue so as to increase an internal fatigue strength. SOLUTION: A plurality of through holes are axially formed in the peripheral wall of the flow passage extending in the axial direction in which a high-pressure fuel flows. A pressure receiving seat surface enlargedly opening in the peripheral surface direction so that branch connection bodies having flow passages led to the flow passage are connected continuously with each other is formed in each of the through holes. A pressing seat surface formed at the connection end part of a branch connection body is abutted and engaged with the pressure receiving seat surface to connect the common rail to the branch connection body. The inner peripheral surface of the flow passage is finished by roller burnishing. A roller burnishing device RB is axially pulled relative to the common rail 10, and rotated relative to the common rail for burnishing. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT

TL;DR: In this article, a roller burnishing machine is used to accelerate a force unit along the direction of its force effect inside a gate, and the free end of the gate is provided with a guide roll guided along a curved path.
Abstract: The invention relates to a roller burnishing machine, in which the force device (13) is mounted in manner that enables it to be displaced along the direction (30) of its force effect inside a gate (31). The force unit (13) is, via one end (32), connected in an articulated manner by means a joint (33) to the end (11) of a shearing arm (3) of the roller burnishing unit (15). The free end (34) of the gate (31) is provided with a guide roll (35), which is guided along a curved path (36) that is recessed in the end (11) of the shearing arm (3). Three joints (28, 29, 33) form a triangle (37) when the force unit (13) is in the closed position. One of the joints (28) points toward the rotating joint (5) via which both shearing arms (3 and 4) of the roller burnishing unit (15) are connected to one another in an articulated manner. When the force unit is in the closed position, a bent lever (27) rests against the stop (39) at the end (12) of the shearing arm (4).
