Abstract: A theoretical model for rotating stall in the vaneless diffuser of a centrifugal compressor is presented. It consists of a time-evolutive calculation of the strong interaction between the inviscid flow core and the unsteady boundary layers along the walls. It is shown that, depending on the diffuser geometry and the diffuser inlet flow angle, a transient perturbation of the outlet static pressure will generate a rotating flow pattern, if the periodicity of this perturbation corresponds to the experimentally observed number of cells. The relative rotational speed and the phase relation between the velocity and the flow angle variations are also in agreement with experimental data.

TL;DR: In this article, an instrumentation package was developed to monitor tractor performance on a John Deere 4440 tractor, including front and rear wheel rotational speed, ground speed by Doppler radar, engine speed, differential speed, drawbar pull, axle torque, and fuel consumption.
Abstract: AN instrumentation package was developed to monitor tractor performance on a John Deere 4440 tractor. Performance variables measured included front and rear wheel rotational speed, ground speed by Doppler radar, engine speed, differential speed, drawbar pull, axle torque, and fuel consumption. Speed comparison tests were conducted to determine relative differences between travel speed sensors (front wheel and Doppler radar) and clocked measurements. Travel speeds obtained by using the front wheel sensor were 4 to 15% less than timed speeds. The percent difference between radar ground speeds and clocked speeds were small on smooth surfaces. For infield conditions, radar ground speeds deviated from clocked speeds by an amount approximately equal to the pitch of the tractor. Results of field performance tests were documented for three tractor/implement combinations. When pulling a JD 230 tandem disk, tractive efficiency and engine load increased 10.6% and 33.4%, respectively, when the operating gear was increased from second to third. Specific fuel energy requirements decreased 24.6%. When shift up and throttle back techniques were practiced, specific fuel consumption decreased 14.8% when pulling a JD 340 offset disk and 8.3% when pulling a JD 100 chisel plow.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a power transmission system for a vehicle of the type in which front and rear wheels are driven by a sole engine, which includes an oil pump adapted to be driven by an engine and a second rotational shaft which transmits the driving force to rear wheels.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a power transmission system for a vehicle of the type in which front and rear wheels are driven by a sole engine. In order to control the distribution of drive torque produced by the engine to front wheel side and rear wheel side of the vehicle according to a difference in rotational speed between both sides and in relative rotational direction between both sides, the power transmission system includes an oil pump adapted to be driven by a first rotational shaft which transmits a driving torque from an engine to front wheels of the vehicle and a second rotational shaft which transmits the driving force to rear wheels of the vehicle. The oil pump produces an oil pressure proportional to the difference in rotational speed and has at least two ports. A clutch mechanism couples the rotational shafts with each other by the discharge pressure of the oil pump and, the clutch mechanism is disposed between the rotational shafts. An oil pressure control system controls the discharge pressure fed from the oil pump to the clutch mechanism to adjust the coupling force of the clutch mechanism in accordance with the difference in the relative rotational direction between the pair of rotational shafts.

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between the amplitude of the difference signal and the rotational speed of the rotor is determined for rotational speeds away from the speed at which vibrational resonance occurs.
Abstract: Axial cracks in the rotor assembly of a variety of rotating machinery are detected while the rotor is being rotated, by sensing mechanical vibrations of the rotor at a location along the length thereof to produce a corresponding rotor vibration signal. A background vibration signal representing the vibration response at an earlier time is provided, as well as a monitor vibration signal representing the vibration response of the rotor at the time the monitor signal is obtained. A speed-dependent first harmonic difference signal is found by vectorially subtracting the first harmonic of the background vibration signal from the first harmonic of the monitor vibration signal. The relationship between the amplitude of the difference signal and the rotational speed of the rotor is then determined for rotational speeds away from the speed at which vibrational resonance occurs, with a relationship wherein the difference signal is proportional to the fourth power of the rotational speed being indicative of the presence of an axial crack in the rotor assembly. Histogram techniques improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the background vibration signal and of the monitor vibration signal. The vibration response of the rotor assembly at rotational speeds near the resonance speed may be utilized in conjunction with the response at speeds away from the resonance speed, in order to confirm the presence of a rotor crack.

Abstract: In an automatic transmission for a vehicle in which frictional engaging elements are selectively actuated by application of a hydraulic pressure for stopping the rotation of a selected one of rotary elements relative to the others thereby changing over the speed ratio, and the hydraulic pressure is subjected to feedback control so that an actual changing rate of the rotation speed of the rotary element can follow up a predetermined reference rate for attaining an ideal speed shift, an initial hydraulic pressure to be supplied to a specific frictional engaging element in the starting stage of a succeeding speed shift is decided on the basis of the detected value of the hydraulic pressure supplied to the specific frictional engaging element in a preceding speed shift. Thus, even when the capacity of the automatic transmission does not primarily match that of an engine combined therewith, the initial hydraulic pressure supplied to the frictional engaging element can be quickly converged to an appropriate value with high accuracy, and the automatic transmission can be satisfactorily combined with any one of engines having different capacities.

TL;DR: In this article, a hydraulic speed control device for limiting the speed of a wind turbine rotor by controlling the deployment of rotor braking devices includes four fluidicly interconnected elements: one or more fluid cylinders, a relief valve, an accumulator and a check valve.
Abstract: A hydraulic speed control device for limiting the speed of a wind turbine rotor by controlling the deployment of rotor braking devices includes four fluidicly interconnected elements: one or more fluid cylinders, a relief valve, an accumulator, and a check valve. Each of the fluid cylinders is mechanically coupled between a blade and an associated rotor braking device, and controls the movement of the rotor braking device between its aligned and braking positions. The relief valve opens to fluidicly connect the fluid cylinders and the accumulator when the rotational speed of the rotor exceeds a limit value. The accumulator receives fluid through the relief valve when the relief valve opens, thereby reducing the fluid pressure in the fluid cylinders and allowing the rotor braking devices to move from their aligned positions to their braking positions. The check valve permits fluid flow from the accumulator toward the fluid cylinders to return the rotor braking devices to their aligned positions when the rotational speed of the rotor has sufficiently slowed.

Abstract: A control system for an automatic transmission system for a vehicle is adapted to control a partial clutch condition of one of two friction engaging devices which are oppositely engaged and disengaged in shifting the transmission from one speed stage to another speed stage, the control being such as to engage or disengage the one friction engaging device gradually by repetitive incremental increase or decrease of actuating fluid pressure supplied to the one friction engaging device while repetitively watching the rotational speed of a rotational element in the transmission during small time intervals. The gradual increase or decrease of the actuating fluid pressure in the one friction engaging device proceeds consistently as long as the rotational speed of the rotational element changes consistently but is temporarily reversed when the change of the rotational speed of the rotational element has deviated from its consistent trend of change as reflecting by the incremental increase or decrease of the actuating fluid pressure getting too high to maintain a smooth shifting between the speed stages.

TL;DR: In this article, a gearless, induction-type planetary reducing coupling was proposed for miniature turbines, where electric currents induced in the collars of the driving rotor react with the inductive magnetic field carried by the self-excited planet wheels causing the planet wheel hubs to roll along circular tracks.
Abstract: In this gearless, induction-type planetary reducing coupling, electric currents induced in the collars of the driving rotor react with the inductive magnetic field carried by the self-excited planet wheels causing the planet wheel hubs to roll along circular tracks. Skidding is prevented by similar electromagnetic interaction in other, stationary rings. Said rolling action drives planet wheel carriers attached to the output shaft, effecting a power take-off with speed reduction from a very high rotational speed. The device is thus suitable for miniature turbines, whether driven by gas or steam, operating too fast for mechanical gear trains, and can be used to manufacture low-cost turbomotors and turbogenerators, for example using existing turboblowers converted into gas turbines by adding a combustion chamber and burner; this coupling, being reversible, serves as the starter therein.

TL;DR: In this paper, a self-centering spherical element made of a structural thermoplastic material is used to engage a pair of friction rings, one connected to an input assembly and one connected with an output assembly.
Abstract: A differential mechanism can be driven by either or both of two inputs to provide an output rotational speed that is variable and can exceed, be equal to, can be less than, and can even be opposite to the input rotational speed. The differential uses a self-centering spherical element made of a structural thermoplastic material and which engages a pair of friction rings, one connected with an input assembly and one connected with an output assembly. A loading arrangement resiliently biases the spherical element into frictional engagement with the friction rings in a manner which is independent of the orientation of the spherical element with respect to the friction rings. Abstract: In a disk size detecting circuit, the size of a disk is determined according to the speed of a motor adapted to rotate the disk and the angle through which motor has rotated after the start thereof. A counter, which is reset with the signal which starts the operation of the motor, counts pulses indicative of the amount of rotation of the motor. Abstract: PURPOSE:To effectively reduce the vibration of a vehicle body, by driving an actuator in accordance with an output waveform which is obtained in accordance with the rotational speed of an engine 1 to apply damping force to the vehicle body, and by comparing the actually measured value of vibration of the vehicle body with a desired value to compensate the output waveform. CONSTITUTION:Waveforms having the same amplitude as that of vibration predicted from the rotational speed of an engine 1 and a phase reverse to that of the vibration are previously stored in a waveform memory means 13. Abstract: A transmission/transaxle assembly for vehicles such as lawn and garden tractors which includes a housing, a dual input, a constant mesh planetary gear assembly, differential gear, axle, and output gear which transfer the planetary gear output to the differential gear and axle. The assembly reduces the rotational speed of two power inputs to a single, lower speed output and allows clutchless, infinitely variable forward, neutral and reverse output speeds by varying the rotational speed of at least one of the inputs with respect to the other. Abstract: PURPOSE:To make drive force maximum, by obtaining a slip rate in accordance with the difference between the rotational speed of drive wheel and a wheel rotational speed which is obtained from a vehicle running speed, and as well by controlling the output torque of a power train in accordance with the deviation between the thus obtained slip rate and a desired slip rate. CONSTITUTION:Rotational speeds 142 through 145 of left and right, and front and rear wheels are stored in predetermined address areas in a RAM1430 by means of an input interface circuit 1200. On the basis of these values a CPU1300 calculates the averaged rotational speed VF of the two front wheels, and as well calculates the averaged rotational speed VR of the two rear wheels. A slip rate is calculated in accordance with the thus calculated values, and discrimination is made on whether this slip rate S is a desired slip rate or not. When the slip rate S is not equal to the desired slip rate upon starting, the CPU calculates the deviation DELTAS therebetween, and also calculates the data DELTAtheta of correction amount for the throttle opening in accordance with the deviation. Further, the CPU issues, in accordance with this correction amount data DELTAtheta, an air amount control signal 220 for controlling the output torque of the engine.
