TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a method and apparatus for providing at least two virtual private network VPN tunnels from a client device in a VPN network having an enterprise gateway and a network VPN gateway.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing at least two virtual private network VPN tunnels from a client device in a VPN network having an enterprise gateway and a network VPN gateway. The method and apparatus includes a client device having an Internet Key Exchange (IKE) module for establishing the at least two tunnels using an IKE protocol wherein a first tunnel is an end-to-end VPN tunnel to the enterprise gateway, and a second tunnel is a network-based tunnel to the network VPN gateway. An IPsec Network Driver Interface interfaces with the IKE module, which includes a security authentication database (SADB) that stores downloaded enterprise security policies respectively for each of the at least two tunnels. A routing table stores IP addresses of local presences and hosts respectively associated with the at least two tunnels, whereby packets are routed over the at least two tunnels based on the downloaded policies.

TL;DR: In this article, a topological address space map of the network is developed to enable a best route selection process, and a central facility analyzes the traffic flows and routes within the network and performs intelligent routing management.
Abstract: A method and system for managing the routing of traffic within a network develops a topological address space map of the network to enable a “best route” selection process. The network is comprised of a backbone connected to a plurality of peering partners. Points on the network monitor traffic flows. A central facility analyzes the traffic flows and routes within the network and performs intelligent routing management. Intelligent routing management ensures that traffic is properly routed through preferred routes on the network, and avoids inefficient routing. Intelligent routing management also selects new routes to be injected into the network in order to further improve the accuracy of the address space map of the network. Intelligent routing management ensures that bandwidth is requested and delivered topologically closely to peering partner networks, and that traffic is carried by the backbone for long haul data distribution in both directions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a solution to improve the security of a virtual private network utilizing the IP network, where a router device is provided with a VR port 30 for each user of a VPN service.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the security of a virtual private network utilizing the IP network. SOLUTION: A router device is provided with a VR port 30 for each user of a virtual private network service. Each VR port 30 has a routing table 32 for a corresponding virtual private network. A control channel terminating part 33 and a VPN constitution module 35 set L2TP tunnels between VR ports belonging to the same virtual private network and themselves. A gateway protocol daemon 31 exchanges routing information through the set L2TP tunnels to generate/update the routing tables 32. An inputted packet is routed in accordance with the routing tables 32. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO

TL;DR: In this article, a method for managing and controlling the discovery and maintenance of routes in the network includes predicting future-needed routes or the need for future communications in a network, and predicting future network dynamics or topology.
Abstract: The mobile ad hoc network includes a plurality of wireless mobile nodes and a plurality of wireless communication links connecting the nodes together. A method for managing and controlling the discovery and maintenance of routes in the network includes predicting future-needed routes or the need for future communications in the network, and predicting future-network dynamics or topology. Partial and complete routes are discovered along predicted future-needed routes based upon the predicted need for routes and the predicted network dynamics or topology. Route tables are built and updated at each mobile node with a route discovery process to store the partial and complete routes in the network.

TL;DR: Quantifying AS path inflation in the Internet has important implications on the extent of routing policies and traffic engineering performed on the Internet, and on BGP (border gateway protocol) convergence speed.
Abstract: A route in the Internet may take a longer AS (autonomous systems) path than the shortest AS path due to routing policies. We systematically analyze AS paths and quantify the extent to which routing policies inflate AS paths. The results show that AS path inflation in the Internet is more prevalent than expected. We first present the extent of AS path inflation observed from the route view routing tables. From an ISP, at least 55% of AS paths are inflated by at least one AS hop and AS paths can be inflated by as long as 6 AS hops. We then employ two typical routing policies to show the extent of AS path inflation for all AS pairs; we find that at least 45% of AS paths are inflated by at least one AS hop and AS paths can be inflated by as many as 9 AS hops. Quantifying AS path inflation in the Internet has important implications on the extent of routing policies and traffic engineering performed on the Internet, and on BGP (border gateway protocol) convergence speed.
