Abstract: A network router includes a set of interface cards to receive packets from a network, and a set of accounting modules to calculate flow statistics for the packets. The router further includes a control unit to adaptively update routing information in response to the calculated flow statistics, and to route the packets in accordance with the routing information. The control unit identifies potentially malicious packet flows for the received packets based on the flow statistics, and applies an intercept filter to intercept the packets of the identified packet flows. The control unit analyzes the intercepted packets in real-time to determine the presence of a network event, and updates the routing information based on the determination, e.g., by terminating routing for packets associated with malicious packet flows. In this manner, the router may adaptively respond to network events, such as network security violations.

Abstract: This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, two new algorithms for deadlock- and livelock-free wormhole routing in the torus network are presented. The first algorithm, called Channels, is for the n-dimensional torus network. This technique is fully-adaptive minimal, that is, all paths with a minimal number of hops from source to destination are available for routing, and needs only five virtual channels per bidirectional link, the lowest channel requirement known in the literature for fully-adaptive minimal worm-hole routing. In addition, this result also yields the lowest buffer requirement known in the literature for packet-switched fully-adaptive minimal routing. The second algorithm, called 4-Classes, is for the bidimensional torus network. This technique is fully-adaptive minimal and requires only eight virtual channels per bidirectional link. Also, it allows for a highly parallel implementation of its associated routing node. Abstract: This paper presents a new mechanism for improving the convergence properties of path vector routing algorithms, such as BGP. Using a route's path information, we develop two consistency assertions for path vector routing algorithms that are used to compare similar routes and identify infeasible routes. To apply these assertions in BGP, mechanisms to signal failure/policy withdrawal, and traffic engineering are provided. Our approach was implemented and deployed in a BGP testbed and evaluated using simulation. By identifying and ignoring the infeasible routes, we achieved substantial reduction in both BGP convergence time and the total number of intermediate route changes.

Abstract: Recently proposed high-radix interconnection networks [10] require global adaptive routing to achieve optimum performance. Existing direct adaptive routing methods are slow to sense congestion remote from the source router and hence misroute many packets before such congestion is detected. This paper introduces indirect global adaptive routing (IAR) in which the adaptive routing decision uses information that is not directly available at the source router. We describe four IAR routing methods: credit round trip (CRT) [10], progressive adaptive routing (PAR), piggyback routing (PB), and reservation routing (RES). We evaluate each of these methods on the dragonfly topology under both steady-state and transient loads. Our results show that PB, PAR, and CRT all achieve good performance. PB provides the best absolute performance, with 2-7% lower latency on steady-state uniform random traffic at 70% load, while PAR provides the fastest response on transient loads. We also evaluate the implementation costs of the indirect adaptive routing methods and show that PB has the lowest implementation cost requiring
