TL;DR: In this article, the spectral characteristics of radiation in the presence of the photonic flame effect were investigated using a fiber optic minispectrometer and showed that the spectrum of long-term afterglow (with a duration of about several seconds when the duration of a pump pulse is equal to 20 ns) appeared in photonic flames.
Abstract: The results of investigation of the spectral characteristics of radiation in the presence of the photonic flame effect recently discovered experimentally are presented. Radiation from a ruby laser operating in the Q-factor modulation regime with a generation wavelength of 694.3 nm is focused near the oriented surface of a globular photon crystal (artificial opal with a globule size of 230 nm) placed on a copper cold guide whose temperature is close to the liquid-nitrogen boiling point (77 K). The spectrum of long-term afterglow (with a duration of about several seconds when the duration of a pump pulse is equal to 20 ns) appearing in the photonic flame effect is detected using a fiber optic minispectrometer and consists of several comparatively narrow lines whose intensity strongly varies with the pumping power. A similar glow is observed in opal samples filled with acetone or ethanol.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the percentage alignment and relaxation time of Cr3+ from oscillograms of the induced emf and of the circularly polarized radiation from the ruby laser.
Abstract: Alignment of Cr3+ in ruby has been accomplished by optically pumping a ruby sample with circularly polarized radiation, 6943 A, from a high-power ruby laser. Alignment of Cr3+ is detected by the emf induced in a coil surrounding the ruby sample. Measurements of the percentage alignment and relaxation time of Cr3+ are obtained from oscillograms of the induced emf and of the circularly polarized radiation from the ruby laser. At room temperature the efficiency of alignment is several tens of percent and the relaxation time of Cr3+ is about 0.1 μsec.

TL;DR: In this paper, a Q-switched ruby laser is used to induce photoconductivity in soda glass, fused quartz, and quartz crystal, and the number of charge carriers produced per laser pulse of 1027 photons cm−2's−1 is accounted for by multiphoton ionization of nonbridging oxygens in the silicon oxygen network.
Abstract: A Q-switched ruby laser is used to induce photoconductivity in soda glass, fused quartz, and quartz crystal. The number of charge carriers produced per laser pulse of 1027 photons cm−2 s−1 is accounted for by multiphoton ionization of nonbridging oxygens in the silicon oxygen network. The relative magnitude of the effect proves that photoconductivity does not result from the ionization of sodium in glass as extensively quoted in the existing literature. The lifetime of the charge carriers produced is estimated to be 10−5 s. Arguments to the effect that this photoconductivity is the primary cause of dielectric breakdown and damage in glasses under excitation by a Q-switched laser are presented.
