TL;DR: In this article, quasi-static compression and three-point-bending tests were conducted to reveal the failure mechanisms and the energy absorption capacity of the woven textile sandwich material, which is ideal to serve as an energy absorbing core.
Abstract: Quasi-static compression and three-point-bending tests were conducted to reveal the failure mechanisms and the energy absorption capacity of the woven textile sandwich material. The compression induces shear deformation due to the tilting of fiber piles within the core. The ductile load–displacement curves are featured by a long deformation plateau by plastic rotations of core piles. Densifications become apparent in the later stage of compression. In three-point-bending, skin crippling and shear failure dominate the load capacity of the thicker panels, while skin fracture dominates the thinner ones. After the initial failure, the progression of plastic hinges renders the panels residual load capacity in a long deflection plateau. The tests suggest that woven textile sandwich material is ideal to serve as an energy absorbing core.

TL;DR: An updated overview of the different manufacturing processes of composite and nanocomposite metal foams is provided.
Abstract: Open-cell and closed-cell metal foams have been reinforced with different kinds of micro- and nano-sized reinforcements to enhance their mechanical properties of the metallic matrix. The idea behind this is that the reinforcement will strengthen the matrix of the cell edges and cell walls and provide high strength and stiffness. This manuscript provides an updated overview of the different manufacturing processes of composite and nanocomposite metal foams.

Abstract: An innovative auxetic-cored sandwich panel (AXP) is proposed. Its perforation resistant performance under high-velocity projectile impact was numerically analyzed using the validated finite element simulation techniques and compared with that of the aluminum foam-cored sandwich panel (AFP) of identical dimensions and weight. It has been found that the AXP is far superior to the AFP in ballistic resistance because of the material concentration at the impacted area due to the negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) effect. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the effects of several key parameters, including impact velocity, face and core thicknesses, and core density, on the ballistic resistance of the AXP and AFP. The results show that the ballistic limit and perforation energy of the AXP is greatly affected by these parameters. Meanwhile, the advantages of AXP over AFP being used as ballistic resistant structures are highlighted. The primary outcome of this research is new information on the developme...
