TL;DR: By applying the proposed method to MIMO SC-FDE system with insufficient cyclic prefix (CP), the method can significantly improve its error performance, obtaining both the benefits of multiplexing gain and spectral efficiency gain.
Abstract: In this letter, an efficient cyclic prefix reconstruction (CPR) technique with turbo equalization is developed for a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE) system. The proposed method consists of pre-processing estimation (PPE) and residual inter-carrier interference suppression (RICIS). The PPE is employed to compute initial values of MIMO turbo equalization, and the RICIS is used to mitigate residual intercarrier interference (ICI) after each iteration of the CPR. By applying the proposed method to MIMO SC-FDE system with insufficient cyclic prefix (CP), we can significantly improve its error performance, obtaining both the benefits of multiplexing gain and spectral efficiency gain

TL;DR: This work estimated CFR and SNR based on the complementary Golay sequences whose sum auto-correlation has a unique peak and zero sidelobe and proved that the proposed CFR andSNR estimation methods are very effective for SCBT system using MMSE-FDE.
Abstract: The single-carrier block transmission (SCBT), a.k.a. single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), is being considered as an option technique for the wireless personal area network (WPAN) operating at 60-GHz. To combat the inter-symbol interference (ISI) in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments, the frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion is much more effective than the one based on the zero forcing (ZF) criterion. However, MMSE-FDE needs the estimation of both the channel frequency response (CFR) and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this work, we estimated CFR and SNR based on the complementary Golay sequences whose sum auto-correlation has a unique peak and zero sidelobe. Through simulations, we proved that the proposed CFR and SNR estimation methods are very effective for SCBT system using MMSE-FDE.

TL;DR: This paper considers joint detection and channel estimation for SC-FDE schemes where a coarse channel estimate is obtained with the help of a training sequence and they employ iterative receivers where for each iteration the data estimates are used to improve the channel estimates.
Abstract: SC-FDE (Single-Carrier with Frequency-Domain Equalization) block transmission technique can have excellent performance in severely time-dispersive channels provided that accurate channel estimates are available at the receiver. In this paper we consider joint detection and channel estimation for SC-FDE schemes where a coarse channel estimate is obtained with the help of a training sequence and we employ iterative receivers where for each iteration the data estimates are used to improve the channel estimates. However, since the frequency-domain data blocks can have large envelope fluctuations, a decision-directed channel estimation might have significant noise enhancement effects. To overcome this problem, we combine channel estimates based on the training sequence with decision-directed channel estimates. Our performance results show that these techniques allow good performances without requiring high-power pilots or training blocks.

TL;DR: A new signal model is derived that represents spreading, channel effect, and despreading as a series of circular convolutions that helps in deriving a new frequency-domain minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalization algorithm for SC block transmission CDMA.
Abstract: Single-carrier (SC) block transmission [1][2] is an efficient scheme in multipath channels. With frequency-domain equalization, SC block transmission avoids complex time-domain equalization. There are also several systems proposed that combine SC-FDE with code-division multiple access (CDMA). However, unlike conventional direct-sequence (DS) CDMA, the present CDMA systems with FDE may be not suitable for asynchronous users, for lack of a signal model that could suitably express the despread signal in frequency domain. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of SC block transmission DS-CDMA that can be applied for asynchronous users. A new signal model is derived that represents spreading, channel effect, and despreading as a series of circular convolutions. This signal model helps in deriving a new frequency-domain minimum mean-square error (MMSE) equalization algorithm for SC block transmission CDMA. Based on the proposed signal model, we also propose a simple channel estimation algorithm. Our architecture and signal model can be applied for further development of multi-user detection algorithms.

TL;DR: A new receiver for joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation on single-carrier modulations with frequency-domain equalization along with SWIPT implementation for EH by using the pilot signal.
Abstract: Radio-frequency energy harvesting (EH) is one of the enabling technologies for the next-generation wireless communication systems. EH techniques are specifically used to improve the energy efficiency of the system. Recently, the simultaneous wireless information and power transmission (SWIPT) protocol is adapted for EH. In this paper, we design a new receiver for joint carrier frequency offset (CFO) and channel estimation on single-carrier modulations with frequency-domain equalization along with SWIPT implementation for EH by using the pilot signal. The pilot signal is a highly energized signal, which is superimposed with the information signal. The superimposed signal is used not only to transmit power for EH purposes but also to estimate the CFO and channel conditions. The receiver is designed to accommodate the strong interference levels in the channel estimation and data detection. The proposed scheme offers a flexible design method and efficient resource utilization. We validate our analytical results using simulations.
