Abstract: A description of noncollinear magnetism in the framework of spin-density functional theory is presented for the exact exchange energy functional which depends explicitly on two-component spinor orbitals. The equations for the effective Kohn-Sham scalar potential and magnetic field are derived within the optimized effective potential (OEP) framework. With the example of a magnetically frustrated Cr monolayer it is shown that the resulting magnetization density exhibits much more noncollinear structure than standard calculations. Furthermore, a time-dependent generalization of the noncollinear OEP method is well suited for an ab initio description of spin dynamics. We also show that the magnetic moments of solids Fe, Co, and Ni are well reproduced.

Abstract: In this brief report, we obtain the necessary and sufficient condition for a class of noncanonical single scalar field models to be exactly equivalent to barotropic perfect fluids, under the assumption of an irrotational fluid flow. An immediate consequence of this result is that the nonadiabatic pressure perturbation in this class of scalar field systems vanishes exactly at all orders in perturbation theory and on all scales. The Lagrangian for this general class of scalar field models depends on both the kinetic term and the value of the field. However, after a field redefinition, it can be effectively cast in the form of a purely kinetic k-essence model.

Abstract: This work deals with F(T) gravity models driven by real scalar fields with usual and phantom dynamics. We illustrate the results with examples of current interest, and we find some analytical solutions for scale factors and scalar fields. The results indicate that torsionscalar models also admit the accelerated expansion of the universe.

Abstract: Weak forms are derived for Maxwell's equations which are suitable for implementation on conventional C/sup 0/ elements with scalar bases. The governing equations are expressed in terms of general vector and scalar potentials for the electric field intensity vector. Gauge theory is invoked to close the system and dictates the continuity requirements for the potentials at material interfaces as well as the blend of boundary conditions at exterior boundaries. Two specific gauges are presented, both of which lead to Helmholtz weak forms which are parasite-free and enjoy simple, physically meaningful boundary conditions. A general and numerically efficient procedure for enforcing the jump discontinuities on the normal components of vector fields at dielectric interfaces and boundary conditions on curved surfaces is also given. >
