TL;DR: It is shown that the determination of SVOC-emissions from materials is important because after a few weeks the emission rates for SVOCs might be higher than for VOCs and with the knowledge of this "emission potential" it is possible to estimate also the release of SV OCs into the (indoor) environment.
Abstract: area (loading about 0.4 m 2 /m 3 ) with about 100 g/m 2 (primer), 1000 g/m 2 /mm (screed) and 300-600 g/m 2 (adhesive) making them an important possible source for VOC/SVOC-emissions, additionally to those from the floor covering. Within the research project ''Environmental and health quality of composite building products'' which Abstract Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and semivolatile organic compounds (SVOC) from materials for flooring installation (primer, screed, adhesive, floor covering) were measured by means of emission test chambers and cells over a time period of at least 28 days at 23 C, 50% relative humidity and an area specific air flow rate of q ¼ 1.25 m 3 /m 2 h. Single com- ponents were tested in comparison to three complete structures (same concrete, primer, screed, adhesive) with different types of floor covering (PVC, carpet, linoleum). Sorption into concrete/screed and different permeability of flooring materials affected the emissions from the complete structures. The complete structures with linoleum and PVC showed the same types of emission and emission rates as the individual floor coverings themselves. Emissions from the carpet-covered structure resulted also from the lower layers. In all cases emis- sions from the complete structures were lower than the sum of emissions from the single components. For two adhesives the formation of secondary emissions (aldehydes and organic acids) was observed starting after the standard testing time of 28 days.

TL;DR: In this article, a soft landing control system for a screed head assembly is presented, where the vibrating member is automatically lowered onto newly placed concrete at or near the junction or cold-joint between the already screeded concrete and the area of newly-placed concrete, to avoid depressions in the already placed concrete.
Abstract: A soft landing control system (10) for a screeding device (12) is operable to automatically lower a vibrating member (24) of a screed head assembly (14) into engagement with a concrete surface at a time and place where the vibrating member is not positioned over an overlap area of already screeded concrete. The vibrating member is automatically lowered onto newly placed concrete at or near the junction or cold-joint between the already screeded concrete and the area of newly placed concrete, so as to avoid depressions in the already placed concrete. Optionally, the soft landing control system may include a timing device and may lower the vibrating member after a period of time following an activating event. Optionally, the control system may detect when the vibrating device is positioned at or near the newly placed concrete and may lower the vibrating member in response to such detection.

TL;DR: A pavement recycling assembly as discussed by the authors includes a frame defining a grinding chamber and a mixing chamber, each of which carries a rotatable laterally-extending toothed grinding drum and the mixing chamber houses at least one rotatable mixing wheel.
Abstract: A pavement recycling assembly includes a frame defining a grinding chamber and a mixing chamber. The grinding chamber carries a rotatable laterally-extending toothed grinding drum and the mixing chamber houses at least one toothed rotatable mixing wheel. A screed assembly is disposed behind the mixing chamber for extruding said mixture at a desired height so as to form a pavement. Pavement is recycled in-situ using the recycling assembly by grinding existing pavement, adding fluid asphalt to the pavement, optionally adding supplemental pavement, and mixing the fluid asphalt with the existing and/or supplemental pavement. The mixture is then extruded at the proper height by an adjustable screed. The recycling assembly may be suspended under a self-propelled chassis so that it can be shifted laterally to engage a pavement surface selected for repair without moving the entire chassis.

Abstract: This paper discusses the concept of “monitoring” moisture content (MC) as a surveying aid in connection with appraisal of buildings and when assessing the drying out of buildings, for example, after flooding damage. It also presents the findings of testing of various instruments to record the drying out of brick, timber and cement screed specimens. Conclusions are drawn on the most appropriate methods for the surveyor to use when monitoring the MC of construction materials.

Abstract: A three-dimensional position of a paving material smoothing device is measured by a GPS, and a paving material supplied onto a pavement surface is smoothed out according to the measured position while the shape of the bottom of a screed is varied so as to match a target shape of the pavement surface corresponding to the three-dimensional position. Alternatively, a three-dimensional position of a compacting device is measured by a GPS, and a pavement surface is compacted according to the measured position while the shape of a compacting surface of a compaction roller is varied so as to match a target shape of the pavement surface corresponding to the three-dimensional position. These enable a pavement surface to be easily constructed to a target shape.

Abstract: This paper describes how it is becoming more common in buildings in North America to require construction of floor-ceiling assemblies that address impact and airborne sound. Resilient sound mats composed of either rubber or plastic materials are commonly used in these assemblies to improve their sound reduction capability. Rubber mats are typically heavy, and can be manufactured in a wide range of dynamic stiffness. In this case rubber mats were used that varied between 6 and 8 kg/m2 and of dynamic stiffness of 16 to 52 MN/m3. Plastic weave mats are typically lighter, 0.8 kg/m2 and have a dynamic stiffness of 28 MN/m3. On top of these mats is poured a screed material, typically composed of lightweight concrete. Finished flooring is then placed on top to complete a floor assembly. All of these materials are non-proprietary and generally available. This combination of products may be referred to collectively as floor toppings. The effectiveness of the resilient materials were measured on both massive (concrete floor) and less massive (joist floor with lightweight sub floor) structures for performance comparison.
