Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for controlling material feed for asphalt pavers. The material feed system includes a screed, feeder conveyor and a spreader auger. A sensor measures a material volume and transmits this information to an electronic control module (ECM). This information may be used as the target material volume, which the ECM may use to calculate a corresponding conveyor speed and auger speed. The sensor monitors the material volume as paving commences, and the ECM maintains the initial calibrated target size by adjusting the auger and conveyor rotational speeds.

Abstract: A hand-held screed for use in making a sidewalk includes a rectangular plate. The plate has a bottom edge suitable for subgrading and for levelling concrete, and a top edge opposite the bottom edge. At either end of the plate, a projection extends beyond the top edge. A handle is affixed to one of the major surfaces of the plate and is braced by a pair of struts. The plate has a width, as measured between the top and bottom edges, equal to the intended depth of the sidewalk. The plate further has a length equal to the intended width of the sidewalk. A form is erected and the area within the form is subgraded using the bottom edge of the plate. The plate is oriented with its length dimension running widthwise of the form. When the top edge of the plate is flush with the top edges of the form, the depth of the area within the form equals the intended depth of the sidewalk. Concrete is now poured into the form and the wet concrete is subsequently levelled using the bottom edge of the plate. The plate is again oriented with its length dimension running widthwise of the form. After levelling, the plate is inverted and control joints are laid using the projections.

Abstract: A triangular truss screed includes a frame having first and second ends and a top support member which forms the apex of the triangular truss. Front and rear screed blades extend between the first and second ends of the screed frame and are coupled in a spaced apart relationship to the lower portion of the front and rear of the frame. The front and rear screed blades each include a flat lower surface and form the front and rear edges of the triangular truss frame. A pan float finisher is coupled to the flat lower surface of the front and rear blades and includes a length substantially equal to the length of the screed frame and a width greater than the spacing between the front and rear blades. A vibration generating mechanism is coupled to the screed to vibrate the pan float finisher.

Abstract: Concrete is the most widely used building material and due to its use, water tightness is one of the factors essential for many constructions. Materials applied on concrete surface as secondary protection can have various forms. One of the material group with waterproofing ability, are materials on so called "crystalline technology base". As this material is cement-based its wide world production brings significant effect on environment. To bring on building materials market new materials should be considered its environmental friendlier production. One of the ways for this group of materials with crystalline abilities is replacing cement by other substituent, at best by secondary raw material. This would bring double advantage, lowering usage of cement and on the other hand use of already produced secondary raw material. This article deals with new developed materials based on "crystalline technology" with cement partly replaced by fly-ash substituent. At this article are presented results of new developed screed and coating modifications and its effectiveness on concrete waterproofing.

Abstract: Innovative building materials are being used in building envelopes for reducing their heating and cooling needs. This paper aims to assess the thermal impact of using lightweight concrete in Lebanese building constructions by pouring an 8 cm thickness of lightweight concrete on the roof and the slab and replacing traditional hollow concrete block by lightweight concrete blocks. Thermal properties of two different samples were experimentally determined: the first one (558 kg/m3) used for the roof and the slab and the second one (1074 kg/m3) used for the walls. Then numerical simulations were carried out for a Lebanese traditional detached house using the characteristics of these two samples. The thermally improved Light Weight Concrete building (LWC) was compared to a traditional Lebanese house base case (BC) using a dynamic building energy simulation tool in the four different Lebanese climate zones: coastal, mid-mountain, mountain, and inland zones. The results highlight the effectiveness of integrating LWC to building envelopes by reducing energy consumption and improving thermal comfort in both winter and summer climate conditions and in the different Lebanese climatic zones. The paper demonstrates that the use of LWC in the vertical walls replacing the traditional hollow blocks can reduce the heating needs by up to 9% and by up to 13% for cooling needs. On the other hand, adding a LWC roof screed has a very high impact on cooling and heating energy consumption, which can reach up to 74% in cooling energy savings and up to 24% in heating energy savings.
