Abstract: Estoque's model for the sea breeze is modified with respect to some essential and other, less essential, details. It is shown among other things that the accelerational terms in the equation for the vertical component of motion are important and should therefore be retained. In addition, the equation of continuity is retained in its original form in order to prevent violation of the mass conservation law. The new model is integrated numerically and the results presented. The results include horizontal and vertical winds, mass conservation, vertical components of vorticity, time hodographs, temperatures (including vertical profiles), vertical transfer of sensible heat, and wind stress at the surface. Particular attention is paid to the land breeze phase of the circulation which so far has received little attention in the published literature. Abstract: An analysis of the Lower Matecumbe Key 1967 waterspout data is presented. It was found that the flow field synthesized across the spray vortex of the second, larger waterspout is closely approximated by a Rankine-combined vortex with solid rotation over a circle 24 m in diameter. Five major tornadoes were documented in the Greater Miami area during 1968, and this anomalous number is ascribed to the development of strong localized zones of convergence on the mesoscale along or slightly inland from the southeast coast where the prevailing southwesterly tropospheric flow interacts with the sea breeze induced by the Florida Peninsula. On the other hand, the large number of waterspouts documented in the Lower Keys during the summer of 1968 were spawned by cumulus congestus cloud lines embedded in a very warm undisturbed trade-wind flow. Abstract: In August 1969, the ultra-sensitive 10.7-cm wavelength JAFNA radar at Wallops Island, Va., recorded what was apparently a land breeze front 12–14 n mi off the coast. Accompanying meteorological data show the land breeze at the shore to be a layer of cold air less than 300 ft deep moving seaward at approximately 2 kt. The radar observations show the land breeze vertical frontal surface sloping landward at ∼20°, with convection over the warm water increasing the layer thickness to 2000 ft near the frontal zone. The radar-observed horizontal frontal surface is a sharp scalloped line echo in the lower 1000 ft but becomes diffuse above. As the local circulation during daylight hours changes to a sea breeze, the land breeze front recedes toward land and dissipates.
