TL;DR: In this article, a variable-speed induced draft blower, a flow-restricting stack orifice and a fuel valve sensitive to the exhaust gas flow rate through the stack was introduced.
Abstract: A heating system of the type having a combustion chamber with a fuel burner, an inlet for combustion air and an exhaust stack is improved by adding a variable-speed induced draft blower, a flow-restricting stack orifice and a fuel valve sensitive to the exhaust gas flow rate through the stack orifice. The fuel valve turns on at a first predetermined exhaust gas flow rate and turns off at a second predetermined exhaust gas flow rate, which is lower than the first predetermined rate. The fuel valve also supplies fuel at a rate proportional to the exhaust gas flow rate. Sensing of the differential pressure across the stack orifice is used to determine the exhaust gas flow rate.

TL;DR: In this paper, a four cycle internal combustion engine is described in which burnt gas is introduced, upon the intake stroke, into a combustion chamber from an exhaust passage to generate a swirl whereby fresh mixture supplied from an intake port to the combustion chamber is disturbed to form a strong swirl.
Abstract: A device for improving combustion efficiency of mixture in a four cycle internal combustion engine is disclosed in which burnt gas is introduced, upon the intake stroke, into a combustion chamber from an exhaust passage to generate a swirl whereby fresh mixture supplied from an intake port to the combustion chamber is disturbed to form a strong swirl. To this end, the valve opening periods of intake and exhaust valves are partially overlapped with each other and a swirl generating guide wall is formed around an exhaust port and extends inwardly from the combustion chamber wall so that a part of burnt gas flows back, upon the intake stroke, into the combustion chamber through the exhaust port unclosed by the exhaust valve to impinge against the guide wall thereby to generate a swirl. A portion of the exhaust passage leading to the exhaust port may extend in a direction offset from the center of the combustion chamber so as to promote the generation of a swirl. Two exhaust ports may be provided instead of a single exhaust port.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an approach for producing a combustible fuel/air mixture in which the fuel is completely vaporized for operating an internal combustion engine, where exhaust gases from the engine pass through a heating manifold (8) in a vaporization chamber (2) to raise the temperature of a body of volatile liquid fuel in the bottom of the chamber.
Abstract: Apparatus for producing a combustible fuel/air mixture in which the fuel is completely vaporized for operating an internal combustion engine. Exhaust gases from the engine (40) pass through a heating manifold (8) in a vaporization chamber (2) to raise the temperature of a body of volatile liquid fuel in the bottom of the chamber. An air stream is also heated by passing it in heat exchange relation with hot exhaust gases from the engine. The stream of heated air is then drawn through an enclosed vapor space (6) at the top of the vaporization chamber, and fuel vapors are entrained therein. The fuel vapor-containing air stream is then mixed with additional air in a mixing chamber (26) to produce a combustible fuel/air mixture which is conveyed to the intake manifold (38) of the engine. Safety screens (64) are provided to prevent entry of sparks or flame into the fuel chamber.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus for controlling the exhaust recirculation rate in an internal combustion engine, in particular an engine with auto-ignition, was proposed, in which the control is accomplished via the mixture valve position ahead of the inlet valves.
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed for controlling the exhaust recirculation rate in an internal combustion engine, in particular an engine with auto-ignition, which includes preferably one mixture valve in the area of the discharge opening of the exhaust recirculation line and which is characterized in that the control is accomplished via the mixture valve position ahead of the inlet valves in accordance with the concentration of at least one component of the air-exhaust gas mixture and/or at least one component of the exhaust gas. Thus it is possible to operate the engine with a relatively emission-free exhaust. An exhaust gas reservoir is further provided, with which peaks in the exhaust gas concentration due to a dynamic driving mode can be intercepted. Finally, it is also proposed that the exhaust recirculation be realized solely via a pressure, which can be controlled in open-loop or closed-loop fashion, in the exhaust line by means of a valve.

TL;DR: In this paper, an internal combustion engine has an exhaust manifold, an inlet manifold, and a carburetor which has a fuel jet, and the corrective signal may be a duty ratio coded pulse signal.
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has an exhaust manifold, an inlet manifold, and a carburetor which has a fuel jet. An oxygen sensor is mounted within the exhaust manifold, and produces an output signal according to the oxygen present within the exhaust gases. A computing means computes a corrective signal according to the oxygen sensor output signal. This corrective signal is fed as an input signal both to a means for supplying secondary air into the exhaust manifold, and also to a means for supplying bleed air to the jet of the carburetor. In a particular embodiment, a secondary air signal cutoff device selectively intercepts supply of the corrective signal to the secondary air supply means, and an air bleed signal cutoff device selectively intercepts the supply of the corrective signal to the air bleed supply means. These cutoff devices may be controlled according to vehicle road speed, engine temperature, engine rotational speed, inlet manifold vacuum, and the temperature of a catalytic converter. The corrective signal may be a duty ratio coded pulse signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a transducer communicated fluidly with both the drive mechanism and an outlet of the compressor, and amplifies the pressure variation of air discharged from the compressor so that the amplified pressure variation is applied in the drive mechanisms.
Abstract: An exhaust bypass type turbo-charger includes a turbine driven by an exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine, a compressor driven by the turbine and supplying a compressed air into the engine, an exhaust bypass valve for controlling an amount of the exhaust gas bypassing the turbine, a drive mechanism for fluidly driving the exhaust bypass valve, and a transducer. The transducer communicated fluidly with both the drive mechanism and an outlet of the compressor, and amplifies the pressure variation of air discharged from the compressor so that the amplified pressure variation is applied in the drive mechanism. The drive mechanism, therefore, can start to open the exhaust bypass valve at a relatively smaller pressure, and fully open it at a relatively larger pressure.
