TL;DR: In this paper, a deflector member is positioned within the flow of exhaust gases being discharged from the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine into a chamber of greater transverse crosssection than said exhaust pipe and containing a flow-through catalyst support, so as to deflect the high velocity discharge stream and provide a substantially uniform flow front as the exhaust gases approach the flow through catalyst support within said chamber.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for controlling the temperature and/or space velocity of exhaust gas passing through an aftertreatment device disposed in the exhaust system of a diesel engine provides an optimal environment for efficient conversion of NOx and undesirable emissions.
Abstract: A method for controlling the temperature and/or space velocity of exhaust gas passing through an aftertreatment device disposed in the exhaust system of a diesel engine provides an optimal environment for efficient conversion of NOx and undesirable emissions during transient and steady state engine operation. The method includes controlling intake and/or exhaust valve timing, either singly or in combination with fuel injection timing and selective individual cylinder cutout, in response to sensed engine operating parameters.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method of recycling exhaust gas of a multi-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine with an exhaust turbocharger operates without EGR flutter valves and also reduces the amount of designed complexity for the entire EGR design.
Abstract: A method of recycling exhaust gas of a multi-cylinder reciprocating internal combustion engine with an exhaust turbocharger operates without EGR flutter valves and also reduces the amount of designed complexity for the entire EGR design. Exhaust gas recycling is only permitted in the system during certain phases of operation of the internal combustion engine. Only the exhaust gas expelled from one cylinder of a cylinder row is completely or partially recycled at a preset exhaust gas recycling rate via the exhaust gas recycling duct to the blowing air manifold duct, while such exhaust gas recycling is prevented between such exhaust gas recycling phases of operation. The exhaust gas expelled from the cylinder or cylinders is also fed to the exhaust gas turbocharger via the gas manifold duct.

TL;DR: In this article, a twin scroll type turbocharger was proposed to provide an exhaust recirculation device for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately achieving high supercharging by means of a twin-scroll type turbocharging.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust recirculation device for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately achieving high supercharging by means of, for example, a twin scroll type turbocharger. SOLUTION: The exhaust recirculation device (10) for an internal combustion engine includes, in its exhaust system, the turbocharger (100 or the like) having a turbine, a first exhaust passage (209) including a first confluence portion (209a) where first exhaust gas from a first cylinder group (#1 and #4) joins and introducing the first exhaust gas to the turbocharger, a second exhaust passage (210) including a second confluence portion (210a) where second exhaust gas from a second cylinder group (#3 and #4) joins and introducing the second exhaust gas to the turbocharger, a first scroll section (121) for introducing the first exhaust gas from the first exhaust passage to the turbine (170), a second scroll section (122) for introducing the second exhaust gas from the second exhaust passage to the turbine, a first bypass passage (131) for causing the first exhaust gas introduced to the first scroll section to bypass the turbine and also communicating with an EGR passage (310) for recirculating the first exhaust gas as EGR gas to an intake system, and a second bypass passage (132) for causing the second exhaust gas to bypass the turbine. TL;DR: In this article, an emission buffer for the cold start state of an IC engine is proposed. But this buffer is limited to the case of unburned hydrocarbons produced during a cold start.
Abstract: More particularly for the catalytic treatment of the exhaust gas of an IC engine, such as the IC engine of a motor vehicle, in the case of which the gases of combustion flow through a converter, the latter is provided with an emission buffer designed for the cold start state. It is capable of storing noxious emissions, more particularly those produced during a cold start, such as unburned hydrocarbons and to release them into the exhaust gas again.
