TL;DR: In this article, an adaptive control model for controlling an exhaust stream temperature at a point along an exhaust system is presented. But the model is not suitable for modeling a large portion of the exhaust system.
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for controlling an exhaust stream temperature at a point along an exhaust system. The exhaust system can include an oxidation catalyst, a particulate filter having an outlet, and a fuel injector for injecting fuel into an exhaust stream at a location upstream from the outlet. An adaptive control can be provided to model a portion of the exhaust system. A fuel injection flow rate at which fuel is injected into the exhaust stream by the fuel injector can be calculated based on the adaptive control model. An operation of the fuel injector can be controlled based on the calculated fuel injection flow rate, to control the exhaust stream temperature at point along the exhaust system. A condition of the exhaust stream can also monitored and an error in the adaptive control model can be determined based on the monitored condition. The adaptive control model can also be changed to reduce the error.

TL;DR: In this paper, the exhaust duct has a chamfer formed on only one side in the region of a flow cross-section, and the swirling flow of exhaust gas rotating about an axis parallel to the cylinder axis, together with the supply of fresh gas, assures an increased fresh-gas concentration in the area of the spark plug.
Abstract: To reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in an internal combustion engine a comparatively large quantity of exhaust gas is recirculated and a specific swirling flow is imposed on the exhaust gas as it is introduced into the combustion chamber. For this purpose the exhaust duct has a chamfer formed on only one side in the region of a flow cross-section. The swirling flow of exhaust gas rotating about an axis parallel to the cylinder axis, together with the supply of fresh gas, assures an increased fresh-gas concentration in the region of the spark plug.

TL;DR: In this paper, a gas flow switching device is provided which is capable of forcing the exhaust gas from the cylinders of the engine to flow toward the upstream bypass exhaust passages when assuming a given operation position.
Abstract: A plurality of upstream main exhaust passages extend from cylinders of an engine. A downstream main exhaust passage is connected to the upstream main exhaust passages. A main catalytic converter is mounted in the downstream main exhaust passage. A plurality of upstream bypass exhaust passages extend from the upstream main exhaust passages. Each upstream bypass exhaust passage has a sectional area smaller than that of the corresponding upstream main exhaust passage. A downstream bypass exhaust passage is connected to the upstream bypass exhaust passages and has a downstream end connected to the downstream main exhaust passage at a position upstream of the main catalytic converter. An auxiliary catalytic converter is mounted in the downstream bypass exhaust passage. A gas flow switching device is provided which is capable of forcing the exhaust gas from the cylinders of the engine to flow toward the upstream bypass exhaust passages when assuming a given operation position.

TL;DR: In this paper, a gaseous fuel management system for an internal combustion engine having a source of Gaseous Fuel such as LPG or CNG, throttle control and an exhaust system and having an angularly movable butterfly valve disposed in the air intake tube, responsive to the operation of the throttle control is presented.
Abstract: A gaseous fuel management system for an internal combustion engine having a source of gaseous fuel such as LPG or CNG, a throttle control and an exhaust system and having an air intake tube for conducting combustion air into the manifold of the engine and an angularly movable butterfly valve disposed in the air intake tube, responsive to the operation of the throttle control. A fuel delivery bar having an interior longitudinal fuel conducting bore is diametrically disposed in the air intake tube upstream from the butterfly valve and has a plurality of fuel delivery orifices in its downstream facing side which orifices communicate with the interior of the bar. A fuel lane interconnects the interior bore of the fuel delivery bar to the fuel source and an electronically controlled valve meters the amount of fuel admitted to the interior bore of the fuel delivery bar as a function of the oxygen content of the products of combustion in the exhaust system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an exhaust gas catalytic converter is inserted into a metal conductive housing and the continuous time process of a chemical catalyzer loading and/or unloading of the exhaust gas converter is detected in a contact less manner using microwave signal.
Abstract: The method involves inserting an exhaust gas catalytic converter into a metal conductive housing. Continuous time process of a chemical catalyzer loading and/or unloading of the exhaust gas catalytic converter is detected in a contact less manner using microwave signal. The microwave signal is coupled and/or decoupled using an antenna (1). The condition of the catalyzer is regulated as continues input variable of an engine control for the regulation of an exhaust after-treatment system. The characteristics of the microwave signal are extracted. The temperature of the exhaust gas catalytic converter or exhaust gas and air-fuel ratio or air-mass throughput serve as other input variables. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an exhaust after-treatment system of a motor vehicle.
