16 Jun 2000TL;DR: A turbocharger with an integral exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine having a compressor rotor with two sets of vanes on opposite sides of the rotor disk for compression of charge air and recirculated exhaust gas as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A turbocharger with an integral Exhaust Gas Recirculation system for an internal combustion engine having a compressor rotor with two sets of vanes on opposite sides of the rotor disk for compression of charge air and recirculated exhaust gas. The charge air and recirculated exhaust gas streams are segregated in the turbocharger and an inlet and an outlet volute for the recirculated exhaust gas is integral with the turbocharger center housing. A variable geometry turbine inlet is provided for exhaust backpressure and fuel air mixture control and an integral exhaust gas bypass for recirculating EGR is controlled by an integral valve mounted with the turbine housing.

14 Jan 1986TL;DR: In this paper, a combustion promoting material injection device is provided for injecting a material for promoting combustion of the combustible particulates into the exhaust system upstream of the particulate filter.
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided in its exhaust system with a particulate filter for trapping combustible particulates contained in exhaust gas. A combustion promoting material injection device is provided for injecting a material for promoting combustion of the combustible particulates into the exhaust system upstream of the particulate filter. Further there are provided a bypass exhaust passage which bypasses the combustion promoting material injection device and the particulate filter, and a flow control valve which controls the amount of exhaust gas flowing through the bypass exhaust passage to control the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the particulate filter when said combustion promoting material is to be injected from the injecting device. When the combustion promoting material is injected, the flow control valve controls the amount of exhaust gas flowing into the particulate filter so that the combustion promoting material can uniformly adhere to the surface of the combustible particulates over the entire area thereof and so that the combustion temperature of the combustible particulates is prevented from rising abnormally high.

28 Sep 1970TL;DR: In this paper, an exhaust gas reaction device is used to prevent emission of undesirable exhaust gas constituents during starting of the engine and warm-up of the reaction device during the warmup period of the device.
Abstract: Internal combustion engine exhaust gases, passing unreacted through an exhaust gas catalytic or thermal reaction device during the warmup period of the device, are directed to an expansible container which retains the entire flow of exhaust gases or to a container of filter, adsorptive and absorptive material which retains undesirable constituents of the exhaust gases. After warmup of the reaction device, the retained gases or constituents are recirculated to the engine induction system or the reaction device. This approach supplements the emission control of the reaction device by preventing emission of undesirable exhaust gas constituents during starting of the engine and warmup of the reaction device.
