Abstract: Age- and sex-specific reference intervals based on the 0.025 and 0.975 fractiles of data derived from a healthy pediatric population are presented for zinc, copper, selenium, iron, ferritin, retinol, alpha-tocopherol, and related analytes in serum. Age was an important covariate for copper, selenium, retinol, and tocopherol, and ferritin in boys. Strong correlations were found between retinol and retinol-binding protein, prealbumin (transthyretin), alpha-tocopherol, and selenium. Tocopherol was highly correlated with both cholesterol and triglycerides. We found no relationship between serum zinc and either retinol or retinol-binding protein. Despite exclusion of children in whom anemia, microcytosis, or variant hemoglobins were found, the 0.025 fractile for iron in several age groups was even less than the concentration considered to indicate poor iron nutritional status.

Abstract: To study the association between selenium status and the risk of myocardial infarction, we compared plasma, erythrocyte, and toenail selenium levels and the activity of erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase among 84 patients with acute myocardial infarction and 84 population controls. Mean concentrations of all selenium measurements were lower in cases than controls. The differences were statistically significant, except for the plasma selenium level. A positive trend in the risk of acute myocardial infarction from high to low toenail selenium levels was observed, which persisted after adjustment for other risk factors for myocardial infarction. In contrast, erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity was significantly higher in cases than controls (31.3 ± 8.4 U/g of hemoglobin and 28.0 ±8.1 U/g of hemoglobin, respectively). Because the toenail selenium level reflects blood levels up to one year before sampling, these findings suggest that a low selenium status was present before the infarction and, thus, may be of etiologic relevance. The higher glutathione peroxidase activity in the cases may be interpreted as a defense against increased oxidant stress either preceding or following the acute event. ( JAMA 1989;261:1161-1164)

Abstract: Selenium deficiency for periods of 5 or 6 weeks in rats produced an inhibition of tri-iodothyronine (T3) production from added thyroxine (T4) in brain, liver and kidney homogenate. This inhibition was reflected in plasma T4 and T3 concentrations, which were respectively increased and decreased in selenium-deficient animals. Although plasma T4 levels increased in selenium-deficient animals, this did not produce the normal feedback inhibition on thyrotropin release from the pituitary. Selenium deficiency was confirmed in the animals by decreased selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GSH-Px) activity in all of these tissues. Administration of selenium, as a single intraperitoneal injection of 200 micrograms of selenium (as Na2SeO3)/kg body weight completely reversed the effects of selenium deficiency on thyroid-hormone metabolism and partly restored the activity of Se-GSH-Px. Selenium administration at 10 micrograms/kg body weight had no significant effect on thyroid-hormone metabolism or on Se-GSH-Px activity in any of the tissues studied. The characteristic changes in plasma thyroid-hormone levels that occurred in selenium deficiency appeared not to be due to non-specific stress factors, since food restriction to 75% of normal intake or vitamin E deficiency produced no significant changes in plasma T4 or T3 concentration. These data are consistent with the view that the Type I and Type II iodothyronine deiodinase enzymes are seleno-enzymes or require selenium-containing cofactors for activity.
