Abstract: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of supplements of individual dietary components in altering the toxicity of dietary cadmium. Day-old coturnix (Japanese quail) were fed 75 mg Cd/kg of an adequate purified diet for 2- or 4-week periods. Cadmium produced moderate growth retardation, severe anemia, decreased ash content of the tibia, and deviations from the normal concentrations of zinc, iron, cadmium, copper, and calcium in one or more of the cells or tissues assayed (erythrocyte, liver, kidney, and tibia). Dietary supplements of zinc, iron(III), copper, and L-cysteine-HCl and injected ascorbic acid produced slight to moderate protection against cadmium-induced anemia, whereas iron(II), ascorbic acid, and D-isoascorbic acid had marked effects in preventing the anemia, growth retardation, poor bone mineralization, and perturbations in elemental concentrations of tissues. Chromium, cobalt, selenium, nickel, molybdenum, and pteroylglutamic acid had no effects. Cadmium did not affect the total ascorbate content of the liver. Removal of dietary ethoxyquin did not affect the toxicity of cadmium or the protective effects of ascorbic acid. Initiation of ascorbic acid feeding at 2 weeks was beneficial to birds fed cadmium throughout the 4-week experiment. Abstract: Despite their extremely low solubility in most solvents, hexagonal grey selenium and tellurium are shown to be remarkably soluble in binary mixtures of thiols and ethylenediamine (en) at room temperature and ambient pressure. A 1 : 4 vol/vol mixture of ethanethiol (EtSH) and en gave saturated solutions of 38 and 9.3 wt% for grey selenium and tellurium, respectively. Crystalline and phase-pure chalcogen is easily recovered from solution by drying and mild heat treatment at 250 °C (for selenium) or evaporation at room temperature (for tellurium). To demonstrate utility for these dissolved chalcogens, it was shown that elemental antimony readily reacts with the dissolved selenium to give a stable, solution processable Sb–Se precursor solution. In the same way, elemental tin reacts with the dissolved tellurium to generate a Sn–Te precursor solution. Upon solution deposition and heat treatment to 250 °C, these precursor solutions yielded crystalline Sb2Se3 and SnTe.

Abstract: Selenium deficiency is necessary for the development of the cardiomyopathy known as Keshan disease. Healthy boys and men (19-22 per group) from a low selenium area (Dechang County) and from an area where sodium selenite was added to salt (Mianning County) were studied. Keshan disease was endemic in Dechang but occurred rarely in Mianning. After an initial blood sampling, each subject received daily selenium supplements (100 micrograms selenium for boys and 200 micrograms for men) as sodium selenate for 14 d. Blood was sampled again at 7 and 14 d. Boys from Dechang had blood selenium levels similar to levels reported for patients with Keshan disease. Plasma glutathione peroxidase activity in boys and men from Dechang was 33 and 43%, respectively, of values from the corresponding groups in Mianning. Comparison of plasma selenium concentrations in boys and men from Dechang gave values of 33 and 38%, respectively, of the corresponding groups in Mianning. Selenium status did not affect red blood cell superoxide dismutase or catalase activities. Plasma vitamin E concentration was below the normal range in all groups but was unaffected by selenium status. Measurements of plasma malondialdehyde revealed no difference between subjects from Dechang and subjects from Mianning. Selenium supplementation raised plasma glutathione peroxidase activity and plasma selenium concentration in all groups. Groups with higher plasma selenium concentration had relatively smaller increases in glutathione peroxidase activity than in selenium concentration. These results characterize the selenium deficiency in subjects at risk for developing Keshan disease. The results obtained with supplementation of selenium indicate the presence of additional plasma forms of selenium besides glutathione peroxidase.

Abstract: The association between breast cancer and selenium, measured in the diet, plasma, erythrocytes, and toenails, was investigated in a case-control study in the Netherlands during 1985-1987. Dietary selenium intake was assessed by a structured dietary history technique among 133 breast cancer cases and 238 population controls. Absolute and energy-adjusted selenium intake and selenium concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes, and toenails were similar in cases and controls. The multivariate adjusted odds ratios of breast cancer for subjects in the lowest quartile compared with the highest quartile were 1.6 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.8-3.4) for dietary selenium, 2.0 (95% CI 0.9-4.4) for plasma selenium, 0.9 (95% CI 0.4-1.9) for erythrocyte selenium, and 1.1 (95% CI 0.6-2.1) for toenail selenium. No statistically significant trend was observed in the odds ratios for any of the four indicators of selenium. These results do not suggest a substantial association between selenium and breast cancer for both short- and long-term markers of selenium status.
