Abstract: From the Publisher: The Web has evolved from HTML quite dramatically over the last few years with revolutionary techniques for content and structural modeling, including XML (eXtensible Markup Language), RDF (Resource Definition Framework) and Topic Maps. Compared to HTML, the content of XML documents is enriched with semantic and structural features, and also is completely separated from its visual appearance. This allows a Web document to be displayed in any desired form. Given such an unrestricted choice, many companies and end users prefer a graphically rich document appearance with effective visual access to semantic and structural information. Abstract: Online communities are islands of people and topics that are not interlinked. Complementary discussions exist on disparate systems but it is currently difficult to exploit the available distributed information. A Semantically Interlinked Online Community (SIOC) can enable efficient information dissemination across communities by creating an ontology that will model concepts identified in discussion methods. Data instances can be accessed from community sites using this ontology, enabling connections between local and remote concept instances, and allowing queries on, or transfer of, the data. By searching on one forum, the ontology and interface will allow users to find information on other forums that use a SIOC-based system architecture. Other uses include cross-site querying, topic-related searches, and the importing of SIOC data into other systems. Fusing information and inferring links among various applications and types of information with SIOC provide relevant insights that make the community information available on the internet more valuable.

Abstract: Information and communication infrastructures underwent a rapid and extreme decentralization process over the past decade: From a world of statically and partially connected central servers rose an intricate web of millions of information sources loosely connecting one to another. Today, we expect to witness the extension of this revolution with the wide adoption of meta-data standards like RDF or OWL underpinning the creation of a semantic web. Again, we hope for global properties to emerge from a multiplicity of pair-wise, local interactions, resulting eventually in a self-stabilizing semantic infrastructure. This paper represents an effort to summarize the conditions under which this revolution would take place as well as an attempt to underline its main properties, limitations and possible applications.

Abstract: The semantic Web vision of a "unifying logical language that enables concepts to be progressively linked into a universal Web" is part of along lineage of dreams of a universal repository of ideas: from Diderot's universal encyclopedia in the 18th century to Vannevar Bush's Memex at the beginning of the computer age to Ted Nelson's Xanadu in the 1970s. However, the semantic Web's development so far has focused primarily on metadata and carefully designed data structures. To realize Berners-Lee's vision, the semantic Web must capture and represent content created every day by people without special training - such content includes blogs, emails, and discussion groups. Rhizome is an experimental, open source content management framework the author have created that can capture and represent informal, human-authored content in a semantically rich manner. Rhizome aims to help bring about a new kind of commons - one of ideas. This commons wouldn't comprise just a web of interlinked pages of content, as is the current World Wide Web, but a web of relationships between the underlying ideas and distinctions that the content implies: a permanent, universally accessible interlinking of content based on imputed semantics such as concepts, definitions, or structured argumentation.
