TL;DR: Racer, which can be considered as a core reasoning agent for the semantic web, is briefly described and supported by various clients such as ontology editors, ontology development and visualization tools.
Abstract: Racer, which can be considered as a core reasoning agent for the semantic web, is briefly described. Racer currently supports a wide range of inference services about ontologies specified in the Ontology Web Language (OWL). These services are made available to other agents via network based APIs. Racer is currently used by various clients such as ontology editors, ontology development and visualization tools, and a first webbased prototype for exploration and analysis of OWL ontolo-

17 May 2004TL;DR: A contribution of this work is the Core Ontology of Services that tries to fill the epistemological gap between the foundational ontology and OWL-S and can be reused to align other Web Service description languages as well.
Abstract: Clarity in semantics and a rich formalization of this semantics are important requirements for ontologies designed to be deployed in large-scale, open, distributed systems such as the envisioned Semantic Web This is especially important for the description of Web Services, which should enable complex tasks involving multiple agents. As one of the first initiatives of the Semantic Webcommunity for describing Web Services, OWL-S attracts a lot of interest even though it is still under development. We identify problematic aspects of OWL-S and suggest enhancements through alignment to a foundational ontology. Another contribution of ourwork is the Core Ontology of Services that tries to fill the epistemological gap between the foundational ontology and OWL-S. It can be reused to align other Web Service description languages as well. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of our work byaligning OWL-S' standard example called CongoBuy.

30 May 2010TL;DR: This paper describes an approach that allows humans to access information contained in the Semantic Web according to its semantics and thus to leverage the specific characteristic of this Web.
Abstract: While the Semantic Web is rapidly filling up, appropriate tools for searching it are still at infancy In this paper we describe an approach that allows humans to access information contained in the Semantic Web according to its semantics and thus to leverage the specific characteristic of this Web To avoid the ambiguity of natural language queries, users only select already defined attributes organized in facets to build their search queries The facets are represented as nodes in a graph visualization and can be interactively added and removed by the users in order to produce individual search interfaces This provides the possibility to generate interfaces in arbitrary complexities and access arbitrary domains Even multiple and distantly connected facets can be integrated in the graph facilitating the access of information from different user-defined perspectives Challenges include massive amounts of data, massive semantic relations within the data, highly complex search queries and users' unfamiliarity with the Semantic Web

TL;DR: A number of techniques have been developed to facilitate powerful data retrieval on the Web and Semantic Web as mentioned in this paper, and three categories of Web query languages can be distinguished, according to the format of the data they can retrieve: XML, RDF and Topic Maps.
Abstract: A number of techniques have been developed to facilitate powerful data retrieval on the Web and Semantic Web. Three categories of Web query languages can be distinguished, according to the format of the data they can retrieve: XML, RDF and Topic Maps. This article introduces the spectrum of languages falling into these categories and summarises their salient aspects. The languages are introduced using common sample data and query types. Key aspects of the query languages considered are stressed in a conclusion.

TL;DR: This book presents the design, implementation and validation of a value-added supportive infrastructure for Semantic Web based business application services across mobile and fixed networks, applied to an emergency healthcare application.
Abstract: This book presents the design, implementation and validation of a value-added supportive infrastructure for Semantic Web based business application services across mobile and fixed networks, applied to an emergency healthcare application. This infrastructure has been realized by the CASCOM European research project. For end users, the CASCOM framework provides seamless access to semantic Web services anytime, anywhere, by using any mobile computing device. For service providers, CASCOM offers an innovative development platform for intelligent and mobile business application services in the Semantic Web. The essential approach of CASCOM is the innovative inter-disciplinary combination of intelligent agent, Semantic Web, peer-to-peer, and mobile computing technology. Conventional peer-to-peer computing environments are extended with components for mobile and wireless communication. Semantic Web services are provided by peer software agents, which exploit the coordination infrastructure to efficiently operate in highly dynamic environments. The generic coordination support infrastructure includes efficient communication means, support for context-aware adaptation techniques, as well as flexible, resource-efficient service discovery, execution, and composition planning. The book has three main parts. First, the state-or-the-art is reviewed in related research fields. Then, a full proof-of-concept design and implementation of the generic infrastructure is presented. Finally, quantitative and qualitative analysis is presented on the basis of the field trials of the emergency application.
