Abstract: SUMMARY This article introduces the Friend Of A Friend (FOAF) vocabulary specification as an example of a Semantic Web technology. A real world case study is presented in which FOAF is used to solve several specific problems of identity management. The main goal is to provide some basic theory behind the Semantic Web and then attempt to ground that theory in a practical solution.

Abstract: Making data available as Linked Data using Resource Description Framework (RDF) promotes integration with other web resources. RDF documents can natively link to related data, and others can link back using Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs). RDF makes the data machine-readable and uses extensible vocabularies for additional information, making it easier to scale up inference and data analysis. This paper describes recent developments in an ongoing project converting data from the ChEMBL database into RDF triples. Relative to earlier versions, this updated version of ChEMBL-RDF uses recently introduced ontologies, including CHEMINF and CiTO; exposes more information from the database; and is now available as dereferencable, linked data. To demonstrate these new features, we present novel use cases showing further integration with other web resources, including Bio2RDF, Chem2Bio2RDF, and ChemSpider, and showing the use of standard ontologies for querying. We have illustrated the advantages of using open standards and ontologies to link the ChEMBL database to other databases. Using those links and the knowledge encoded in standards and ontologies, the ChEMBL-RDF resource creates a foundation for integrated semantic web cheminformatics applications, such as the presented decision support.

Abstract: This article gives a practical introduction into the language Xcerpt, guided by many examples for illustrating language constructs and usage. Xcerpt is a rule-based, declarative query and transformation language for XML data. In Xcerpt, queries and the (re-)structuring of answer (also called "constructions") are expressed in terms of patterns instead of path navigations (like in XSLT and XQuery). Pattern queries are evaluated against XML documents using a non-standard form of unification (called "simulation unification" [BS02]). Furthermore, Xcerpt supports so-called rule chaining (with recursion), which makes it suitable even for complex query programs. Abstract: Sentilo is an unsupervised, domain-independent system that performs sentiment analysis by hybridizing natural language processing techniques and semantic Web technologies. Given a sentence expressing an opinion, Sentilo recognizes its holder, detects the topics and subtopics that it targets, links them to relevant situations and events referred to by it and evaluates the sentiment expressed on each topic/subtopic. Sentilo relies on a novel lexical resource, which enables a proper propagation of sentiment scores from topics to subtopics, and on a formal model expressing the semantics of opinion sentences. Sentilo provides its output as a RDF graph, and whenever possible it resolves holders’ and topics’ identity on Linked Data.

Abstract: The Semantic Web is vitally dependent on a formal meaning for the constructs of its languages. For Semantic Web languages to work well together their formal meanings must employ a common view (or thesis) of representation, otherwise it will not be possible to reconcile documents written in different languages. The thesis of representation underlying RDF and RDFS is particularly troublesome in this regard, as it has several unusual aspects, both semantic and syntactic. A more-standard thesis of representation would result in the ability to reuse existing results and tools in the Semantic Web.
