TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study light emission patterns from stadium-shaped semiconductor (GaAs) microcavity lasers theoretically and experimentally and demonstrate that the averaging by low-loss modes, such as those realized in multimode lasing, generates an emission pattern in good agreement with the ray model's prediction.
Abstract: We study light emission patterns from stadium-shaped semiconductor (GaAs) microcavity lasers theoretically and experimentally. Performing systematic wave calculations for passive cavity modes, we demonstrate that the averaging by low-loss modes, such as those realized in multimode lasing, generates an emission pattern in good agreement with the ray model's prediction. In addition, we show that the dependence of experimental far-field emission patterns on the aspect ratio of the stadium cavity is well reproduced by the ray model.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented a 16-channel digitally tunable laser integrated on InP with the possibility to produce groups of four wavelengths at the same time, using two arrays of four semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) with two periodical four-channel intracavity phased arrays (PHASARs) with channel spacings of 100 and 400 GHz.
Abstract: We present a compact 16-channel digitally tunable laser integrated on InP with the possibility to produce groups of four wavelengths at the same time. The cavity contains two arrays of four semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) with two periodical four-channel intracavity phased arrays (PHASARs) with channel spacings of 100 and 400 GHz. By activating two out of the eight SOAs, 16 different wavelengths can be selected. Light was coupled out of the cavity by waveguides placed in the second focal order of the PHASARs. Reflections from the end facets of the wafer are minimized using mode filters and angled output waveguides.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors experimentally demonstrate thermo-optic locking of a semiconductor laser to an integrated toroidal optical microcavity for time periods exceeding twelve hours, without requiring any electronic control systems.
Abstract: We experimentally demonstrate thermo-optic locking of a semiconductor laser to an integrated toroidal optical microcavity. The lock is maintained for time periods exceeding twelve hours, without requiring any electronic control systems. Fast control is achieved by optical feedback induced by scattering centers within the microcavity, with thermal locking due to optical heating maintaining constructive interference between the cavity and the laser. Furthermore, the optical feedback acts to narrow the laser linewidth, with ultra high quality microtoroid resonances offering the potential for ultralow linewidth on-chip lasers.
