TL;DR: The concept of semiosphere was first put forward by Yuri Lotman in the context of cultural semiotics as discussed by the authors, where the smallest functioning mechanism is not a single sign or single text or single semiotic system, but an entire semiotic space of which the internal organization is created and maintained by multiple sign processes.
Abstract: The concept of semiosphere was first put forward by Yuri Lotman in the context of cultural semiotics. He introduced the term in the article ‘On Semiosphere’ (Lotman, 1984) and elaborated it further in Universe of the mind (Lotman, 1990) and Culture and explosion (Lotman, 1992). The fundamental insight that underlies Lotman's concept is the notion that the smallest functioning mechanism is not a single sign or single text or single semiotic system, but an entire semiotic space of which the internal organization is created and maintained by multiple sign processes, which occur at different levels of a multifaceted and multileveled system of communication.
