TL;DR: A joint PHY-MAC spectrum sensing algorithm is proposed, which employs sequential probability ratio test in the PHY layer and a probability-based sensing scheduling mechanism in the MAC layer that has remarkable performance improvement compared with periodic energy detection.
Abstract: Spectrum sensing is one of the key functionalities in cognitive radios which enables opportunistic spectrum access. In a cognitive radio system, secondary users need to detect the emergence of primary users as soon as possible to avoid harmful interference. In particular, sensing performance can be evaluated by detection delay and sensing overhead. Sequential detection techniques such as quickest detection can achieve minimum detection delay, while MAC layer sensing scheduling of periodic energy detection has demonstrated its high sensing efficiency. These motivate us to propose a joint PHY-MAC spectrum sensing algorithm in this letter, which employs sequential probability ratio test in the PHY layer and a probability-based sensing scheduling mechanism in the MAC layer. This algorithm can minimize detection delay with limited sensing overhead. Simulation results reveal that it has remarkable performance improvement compared with periodic energy detection.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-response sequential bifurcation (MSB) method is proposed for random simulation with multiple responses (outputs), which selects groups of inputs such that within a group, all inputs have the same sign for a specific type of output, so no cancellation of first-order effects occurs.

TL;DR: The boundaries approach can now be used with a wide variety of test statistics, including those appropriate to the analysis of survival data, and can take various forms, although the use of straight lines still eases the underlying mathematical theory while at least approximating to the requirements of the majority of clinical trials.
Abstract: The earliest formal sequential procedure, the sequential probability ratio test, involved the plotting of certain test statistics and comparison with straight line parallel boundaries. The boundaries approach can now be used with a wide variety of test statistics, including those appropriate to the analysis of survival data. The boundaries can take various forms, although the use of straight lines still eases the underlying mathematical theory while at least approximating to the requirements of the majority of clinical trials. The implementation of sequential methods needs to be made flexibly and sensitively, with each clinical trial meriting an individualized approach.

TL;DR: This research empirically demonstrates the validity of the proposed SPRT-based testing approach as well as the technical feasibility for teachers and business organizations to really take advantage of CAT in their daily routines.
Abstract: Computer adaptive testing (CAT) is theoretically sound and efficient, and is commonly seen in larger testing programs. It is, however, rarely seen in a smaller-scale scenario, such as in classrooms or business daily routines, because of the complexity of most adopted Item Response Theory (IRT) models. While the Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT) model is less complicated, it only provides the examinee's mastery result. We thus propose an SPRT-based adaptive testing approach that is simpler to implement while still being able to approximate IRT scores in semantic or rank levels for flexible assessment needs. An English adaptive testing prototype is implemented and benchmarked to the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) testing results. Generally, this research empirically demonstrates the validity of the proposed SPRT-based testing approach as well as the technical feasibility for teachers and business organizations to really take advantage of CAT in their daily routines.
