Abstract: Cellular network performance can significantly benefit from direct device-to-device (D2D) communication, but interference from cochannel D2D communication limits the performance gain. In hybrid networks consisting of D2D and cellular links, finding the optimal interference management is challenging. In particular, we show that the problem of maximizing network throughput while guaranteeing predefined service levels to cellular users is non-convex and hence intractable. Instead, we adopt a distributed approach that is computationally extremely efficient, and requires minimal coordination, communication and cooperation among the nodes. The key algorithmic idea is a signaling mechanism that can be seen as a fictional pricing mechanism, that the base stations optimize and transmit to the D2D users, who then play a best response (i.e., selfishly) to this signal. Numerical results show that our algorithms converge quickly, have low overhead, and achieve a significant throughput gain, while maintaining the quality of cellular links at a predefined service level.

Abstract: Grid computing has relied on "best effort" as the guiding principal of operation. However, commercial grids need to provide much stricter guarantees. These guarantees have to be specified in terms of service level agreements and have to be monitored and assured. We propose an architecture for specifying and monitoring service level agreements to achieve the above. The architecture relies on a network of communicating proxies each maintaining SLAB committed within the administrative domain of the proxy. SLAB are either negotiated between or specified to management proxies, and they are responsible for automated monitoring of data and for triggering evaluations of the registered SLAs. An unambiguous and,flexible language for formalizing SLAB is presented to achieve the above. The management proxy allows reasoning about the overall status of SLAB related to an application context across multiple administrative domains by contacting and querying involved management proxies, obtaining measurement information from multiple proxies, if needed and performing a consolidated SLA evaluation. The process of measurement collection, and SLA evaluation is automated and based on web services technology. The scenario considers HP Utility Data Center as a typical Commercial Grid deployment environment.

Abstract: A shared-use vehicle system has a small number of vehicles reserved exclusively for use by a relatively larger group of members. Challenged by accessible and economical public transportation systems, multiple-station shared-use vehicle companies are driven to gain a competitive edge by using an operator-based relocation system to ensure privacy, simplicity, and convenience to their users. To help operators identify measures to maximize resources and enhance service levels, a simulation model is developed, with an emphasis on operator-based relocation techniques. A qualitative analysis conducted on operator-based relocation systems provides insights on the key issues involved and their influences over each other. On the basis of this analysis, a time-stepping simulation model is developed, and three performance indicators are proposed to evaluate the effectiveness of the different relocation techniques. The model has been validated by using commercially operational data from a local shared-use vehicle company. With the existing operational data as the base scenario, two proposed relocation techniques, namely, shortest time and inventory balancing techniques, and various operating parameters are studied. The simulation results have shown that if the inventory balancing relocation technique is used, the system can afford a 10% reduction in car park lots and 25% reduction in staff strength, generating cost savings of approximately 12.8% without lowering the level of service for users.

Abstract: Advanced computing on cloud computing infrastructures can only become viable alternative for the enterprise if these infrastructures can provide proper levels of nonfunctional properties (NPFs). A company that focuses on service-oriented architectures (SOA) needs to know what configuration would provide the proper levels for individual services if they are deployed in the cloud. In this paper we present an approach for performance evaluation of cloud computing configurations. While cloud computing providers assure certain service levels, this it typically done for the platform and not for a particular service instance. Our approach focuses on NFPs of individual services and thereby provides a more relevant and granular information. An experimental evaluation in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) verified our approach.
