An Analysis of Traces from a Production MapReduce Cluster

Abstract: MapReduce is a programming paradigm for parallel processing that is increasingly being used for data-intensive applications in cloud computing environments. An understanding of the characteristics of workloads running in MapReduce environments benefits both the service providers in the cloud and users: the service provider can use this knowledge to make better scheduling decisions, while the user can learn what aspects of their jobs impact performance. This paper analyzes 10-months of MapReduce logs from the M45 supercomputing cluster which Yahoo! made freely available to select universities for academic research. We characterize resource utilization patterns, job patterns, and sources of failures. We use an instance-based learning technique that exploits temporal locality to predict job completion times from historical data and identify potential performance problems in our dataset.

Protecting privacy against location-based personal identification

Abstract: This paper presents a preliminary investigation on the privacy issues involved in the use of location-based services. It is argued that even if the user identity is not explicitly released to the service provider, the geo-localized history of user-requests can act as a quasi-identifier and may be used to access sensitive information about specific individuals. The paper formally defines a framework to evaluate the risk in revealing a user identity via location information and presents preliminary ideas about algorithms to prevent this to happen.

Equity implications of marketing ecosystem services in protected areas and rural communities: Case studies from Meso-America

Abstract: This paper investigates the equity implications of marketing ecosystem services in protected areas and rural communities. We use a three-tiered equity framework to analyse four distinct efforts to commercialise watershed recharge and carbon dioxide fixation by forests in Meso-America. We show that project development and participation are strongly mediated by organisational networks, as well as existing rights of access over land and forest resources. We demonstrate that procedural fairness diverges strongly when initiatives are implemented in protected areas or in rural communities. While in the former reserve managers and intermediaries concentrate all decision-making power, initiatives working with rural communities are able to integrate more significantly service providers in management decisions. Marketing ecosystem services in protected areas contributes to reduce expenditure rates for protected area management, but also results in less equitable outcomes, as rural communities and forest resource users become excluded from receiving sustained development benefits. When ecosystem services are commercialised by rural farmers, payments do not cover opportunity costs but act as a significant incentive for participation in most cases. Ecosystem service providers also benefit from complementary project activities, such as forest management training and agricultural extension support. We argue that limited economic impact and existing inequities in decision-making and outcomes can be explained by problems of institutional design, in particular the inability of markets and payments for ecosystem services to account for context-related factors, such as property rights.

Distinguishing between service relationships and encounters

Abstract: In 3 separate studies, the authors developed measures of different social mechanisms used in the interaction between a customer and a service provider and examined their effects. Service relationships occur when a customer has repeated contact with the same provider. Service encounters occur when the customer interacts with a different provider each time. Service pseudorelationships are a particular kind of encounter in which a customer interacts with a different provider each time, but within a single company. The 3 studies showed consistently that customers having a service relationship with a specific provider had more service interactions and were more satisfied than those who did not have one. These results held across 7 different service areas, 3 diverse samples, and 2 different ways of measuring a service relationship.

Enhancing Security and Privacy in Traffic-Monitoring Systems

Abstract: Intelligent transportation systems increasingly depend on probe vehicles to monitor traffic: they can automatically report position, travel time, traffic incidents, and road surface problems to a telematics service provider. This kind of traffic-monitoring system could provide good coverage and timely information on many more roadways than is possible with a fixed infrastructure such as cameras and loop detectors. This approach also promises significant reductions in infrastructure cost because the system can exploit the sensing, computing, and communications devices already installed in many modern vehicles. This architecture separates data from identities by splitting communication from data analysis.
