Abstract: An x-ray interferometer has been developed that uses two transmission phase gratings to analyze wave front distortions in the hard x-ray range. The interferometer is insensitive to mechanical drift and vibrations, and it is tunable over a wide range of photon energies. This setup was used for differential phase contrast imaging of low-absorbing test objects. We obtained micrographs with moire fringes of good visibility, which revealed the local phase shift gradient caused by the objects. A comparison with numerically simulated images indicates that quantitative analysis of unknown phase objects is possible.

Abstract: Phase imaging with a high-resolution wavefront sensor is considered. This is based on a quadriwave lateral shearing interferometer mounted on a non-modified transmission white-light microscope. The measurement technology is explained both in the scope of wave optics and geometrical optics in order to discuss its implementation on a conventional microscope. In particular we consider the effect of a non spatially coherent source on the phase-image signal-to-noise ratio. Precise measurements of the phase-shift introduced by microscopic beads or giant unilamellar vesicles validate the principle and show the accuracy of the methods. Diffraction limited images of living COS-7 cells are then presented, with a particular focus on the membrane and organelle dynamics.

Abstract: We have developed an active optical imaging system capable of correcting optical wave-front errors in real time at frequencies in the kilohertz range. Wave-front errors due to atmospheric turbulence in the propagation path, as well as optical figure aberrations and wave-front errors due to mechanical and thermal changes may be compensated. The system used an ac shearing interferometer, a parallel analog data processor, and a monolithic piezoelectric active mirror arranged in a closed-loop configuration. This compensation system can be applied to apertures of any size; experimental results are shown for a system with 21 correction zones.

The high intensity of the laser per unit of solid angle gives an interference pattern that is visible in room light. The narrow spectral width of the source allows a simple plane parallel plate to be used to obtain the desired shear.

Abstract: This paper describes a new image-shearing camera which focuses two laterally sheared images at the film plane. With coherent illumination, this camera becomes a shearing interferometer, which directly measures the derivatives of the surface displacements. This strain measuring tool enjoys several advantages over the conventional, holographic, and speckle interferometry, namely, (1) better fringe quality (than speckle interferometry); (2) does not require special vibration isolation; (3) very simple optical setup; (4) direct determination of strains; and (5) extended controllable range of sensitivity.
