TL;DR: In this article, a gas tungsten arc welding process with Zn-15%Al and Al-12%Si flux-cored filler wires was used to join aluminum alloy to carbon steel and stainless steel.
Abstract: Butt joining of aluminum alloy to carbon steel and stainless steel was conducted by using gas tungsten arc welding process with Zn-15%Al and Al-12%Si flux-cored filler wires, respectively. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-welded and post-weld heat treated joints were examined. Presetting 1.5 mm-wide welding gap can promote the wetting ability of molten filler metal on the faying surfaces, and then significantly enhance the joint strength. During tensile testing, the specimens from 5A02 Al/Q235 carbon steel joint fractured in Al base metal, but those from 5A02 Al/304 stainless steel joint fractured in the weld or through the interfacial layer. Hardening effect was observed in the heat-affected zone (HAZ).

TL;DR: In this paper, a consumable electrode type arc welding method and device is presented, in which stable welding can be performed at a high speed for a welding gap greater than a thickness of a base metal and the like, and welding conditions are automatically changed according to the welding gap along a welding line to perform the stable welding.
Abstract: Provided is a consumable electrode type arc welding method and device in which stable welding can be performed at a high speed for a welding gap greater than a thickness of a base metal and the like, and welding conditions are automatically changed according to the welding gap along a welding line to perform the stable welding. A first base metal extended vertically and a second base metal which has an upper end positioned in a middle portion of the first base metal and is provided along the first base metal are welded together. The first and second base metals have a thickness of 2.8 mm, and an arc is generated toward an upper end portion of the second base metal from obliquely above on a side opposite to the first base metal. The second base metal is melted to be a part of a weld metal. An amount of the second base metal to be melted is increased or decreased according to a welding gap detected by a laser sensor.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flat bead geometry is obtained by increasing the Si content of steel sheets and galvanized steel sheets contribute to corrosion resistance of weld parts, while low heat input welding such as CMT (cold metal transfer) welding has begun to use for body welding and cross tension strength of advanced high tensile strength steel are improved by CMT applied arc spot welding.
Abstract: Recent research progresses of arc welding techniques are described, focusing on the automotive chassis members or body members. As for welded joint performance, static strength and fatigue strength are improved with increasing of steel strength less than 780 MPa tensile strength. Additionally, galvanized steel sheets contribute to corrosion resistance of weld parts. Developed welding materials have made it possible to improve welding activities such as reducing spatters, gap allowance or weldability of galvanized steel sheets. In contrast, components of the steel sheet also effects on welding phenomenon, a flat bead geometry is obtained by increasing Si content of steel sheets. Low heat input welding such as CMT (Cold metal transfer) welding has begun to use for body welding and cross tension strength of advanced high tensile strength steel are improved by CMT applied arc spot welding.
