Abstract: Austenitic stainless steel, low hydrogen ferritic steel and high nickel steel consumables are used for the welding of armor-grade quenched and tempered (Q&T) steels. The use of such consumables in the welding of armorgrade Q&T steel leads to the formation of distinct microstructures in the respective welds and has a major influence on the dynamic fracture toughness. Hence, this paper examines how shielded metal arc welding consumables affect the dynamic fracture toughness (J1d) of armor-grade Q&T steel joints. The J1d values of joints fabricated with high nickel steel joints are superior than all other joints.

Abstract: of the Disclosure In a multiple electode gas shielded arc welding method wherein a plurality of electrodes are arranged along the welding seam line of a piece of metal to be welded and the continuous gas shielded arc welding of the piece is accomplished simultaneously by the electrodes, the chemical composition of a mixed shielding gas fed to the electrodes is selected in such a manner that the chemical composition of the shielding gas fed to the leading electrode or electrode group differs relative to that fed to the trailing electrode or electrode group to have a different active gas volume ratio and in this way the chemical composition of the weld metal layers formed by the preceeding and following welding operations are homogenizing to ensure uniformity of the properties at every positions in the weld zone.

Abstract: High strength low alloy (HSLA) steel, namely HSLA-65, has shown promise as a replacement for more common high strength shipbuilding steels. However, conventional high heat input welding processes can cause significant distortion, often requiring expensive post-weld reworking. Butt welds in HSLA-65 steel were fabricated using a hybrid fibre laser-gas metal arc welding (GMAW) procedure to investigate the efficacy of distortion mitigation via low heat input joining. Heat input from the laser and arc sources were roughly equal at ~5.2 kW each, and plates were welded in either the laser-leading or arc-leading configuration. In either case, butt welds in ~9 mm thick plates could be made in a single pass at a total heat input of ~0.4 kJ/mm. Welding induced distortion was minimal. Analysis of the microstructure and microhardness of the welds is provided, along with some preliminary results of mechanical and impact testing.
