Abstract: Researches and developments of laser and arc hybrid welding has been curried out since in 1978. Especially, CO 2 laser and TIG hybrid welding has been studied for increasing the penetration depth and welding speed. Recently laser and MIG/MAG/Plasma hybrid welding processes have been developed and applied to industries. It was recognized as a new welding process that promote the flexibility of the process for increasing the penetration depth, welding speed and allowable joint gap and improving the quality of the welds. In the present work, CO 2 Laser-MAG hybrid welding of carbon steel (SM490) was investigated to make clear the phenomenon and characteristics of hybrid welding process comparing with laser welding and MAG process. The effects of many process parameters such as welding current, arc voltage, welding speed, defocusing distance, laser-to-arc distance on penetration depth, bead shape, spatter, arc stability and plasma formation were investigated in the present work. Especially, the interaction of laser plasma and MAG arc plasma was considered by changing the laser to arc distance (=D LA ).

Abstract: A two–dimensional dynamic theory for predictions of arc and electrode properties in arc welding has been used to investigate heat transfer phenomena in the welding wire in gas metal arc welding (GMAW). The theory is a unified treatment of the welding wire, the plasma and the workpiece and includes a free surface treatment for the welding drops, accounting for the effects of inertia, gravity, surface tension, arc pressure, magnetic forces, and viscous drag by the gas flow around the drop. Also, the theory accounts for the variation of the surface tension coefficient with temperature and includes thermal and dynamic phenomena within the solid and liquid phases of the wire, together with a detailed treatment for the electrode sheath regions. Calculations are made for arcs in argon with wires of mild steel at currents between 150 and 325 A. Abstract: An optimized technique for real-time spectral analysis of thermal plasmas, with application in the monitoring and defect detection of industrial welding processes, particularly arc-welding, is presented in this paper. The calculation of the plasma electronic temperature by means of a sub-pixel algorithm permits on-line quality assessment of the welds, allowing the detection of common defects to be found in the welding seam, such as oxidation due to insufficient shielding gas flux or lack of penetration caused by current fluctuations of the welding power source. The proposed technique has been successfully checked in a real-time arc-welding monitoring system, and experimental results of stainless-steel welds are also reported.

Abstract: In the present investigation, the individual and interactive effects of the main welding parameters on weld quality of plasma arc keyhole welding of conventional structural steel, high strength microalloyed steel and strong formable microalloyed steel have been examined using welding of butt joints with a square groove in various welding positions, and welding of joint roots with a single-V-groove and the root face in the flat position. The most important welding parameters are welding current, welding speed and welding gases, especially plasma gas flow rate. Welding parameter combinations producing the best quality welds are presented. It is shown that it is possible to achieve defect-free high-quality welds with good strength and toughness properties, but the allowable range of variation of welding parameters, especially for the highest weld quality, is narrow. An argonhydrogen mixture for the plasma gas together with argon as shielding and backing gases give the best results with respect to weld quality.
