TL;DR: In this article, the rate of dissociation of hydrogen was determined in noble gas-H2 mixtures over the temperature range 2800° to 5000°K by density measurements in incident shock waves.
Abstract: The rate of dissociation of hydrogen was determined in noble gas‐H2 mixtures over the temperature range 2800° to 5000°K by density measurements in incident shock waves. An x‐ray densitometer was used to measure the density profile produced by the shock wave and the dissociation process. The experimental density profiles were compared with calculated profiles which extended from the shock to the equilibrium region to determine the dissociation rates. The three reactions considered were H2+M⇌ lim krkd2H+M, where M can be Xe, H2, and H. The values and error limits of kr=kd/K for these third bodies in cc2 mole—2 sec—1 are 1.5×1018T—1±30%, 3×1018T—1±50%, and 1×1019T—1±50% respectively. The third body efficiencies of H2 and H relative to Xe are 2 and 7. Kr and Ar were found to have the same efficiency as Xe in the hydrogen dissociation process. The temperature dependence of the recombination coefficient could not be determined in these measurements, so the T—1 was arbitrarily selected for all species. These rat...

TL;DR: In this article, a qualitative description of the theory of the operation of a shock tube is given together with a discussion of its design, as well as some auxiliary equipment needed in its operation.
Abstract: A qualitative description of the theory of the operation of a shock tube is given together with a discussion of its design. The construction of a particular tube 4 in.×18 in.×38 ft. is described as well as certain auxiliary equipment needed in its operation. The technique of operating the device and comparisons of its performance with expectations are discussed. This tube has been used to study certain properties of shock waves and to obtain a flow field of marked uniformity and freedom from turbulence. The Mach number of this flow may be adjusted at will from zero to the supersonic range without difficulty. An interferometer makes it possible to obtain an instantaneous picture of the density field so that the apparatus may be used as a very efficient transonic wind tunnel.

TL;DR: In this paper, the first investigation on the combustion chemistry of n -octanol, a long chain alcohol, was performed in a high-pressure shock tube, and stable species concentration profiles were obtained in a jet stirred reactor for a range of initial conditions.
Abstract: This study presents the first investigation on the combustion chemistry of n -octanol, a long chain alcohol. Ignition delay times were determined experimentally in a high-pressure shock tube, and stable species concentration profiles were obtained in a jet stirred reactor for a range of initial conditions. A detailed kinetic model was developed to describe the oxidation of n -octanol at both low and high temperatures, and the model shows good agreement with the present dataset. The fuel’s combustion characteristics are compared to those of n -alkanes and to short chain alcohols to illustrate the effects of the hydroxyl moiety and the carbon chain length on important combustion properties. Finally, the results are discussed in detail.
