Abstract: Ordered macroporous silica, a silica gel microhoneycomb (SMH), has been prepared through a method which uses micrometer-sized ice crystals as a template. Template ice crystals, which have a continuous rod shape, a polygonal cross section, and ordered diameters, were grown inside precursor silica hydrogels under a condition where the pseudo-steady-state growth of them continues. Besides their ordered macroporosity, micro-/mesopores develop inside the honeycomb walls through the freeze-drying of SMHs soaked in tert-butyl alcohol. SMHs have straight and polygonal macroporous voids, which are created and retained through the formation and removal of the ice crystals. Micromorphology including macropore size and wall thickness, micro-/mesoporosity inside the honeycomb walls, and thermal stability of SMHs were investigated in detail through scanning electron microscopy observation, nitrogen adsorption−desorption measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. Abstract: A method for the analysis of potential endocrine-disrupting compounds, such as phenolic halogenated compounds (e.g., chlorinated and brominated phenols) and hydroxylated PCBs, in blood plasma is presented. Neutral halogenated compounds, specifically brominated diphenyl ethers and PCBs, are also included in the evaluation. An efficient denaturation and extraction step is described, and three methods for lipid removal are evaluated. The latter includes a nondestructive method based on high-resolution gel permeation chromatography (HR-GPC), a newly developed silica gel/sulfuric acid column, and lipid removal by sulfuric acid treatment. Recoveries, based on gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD), were between 70 and 90% for most of the studied compounds. The recoveries of phenolic compounds were generally slightly lower than those of the neutral compounds. The sulfuric acid treatment and silica gel/sulfuric acid column gave the highest yields for acid stable compounds, although a few target compounds were lost during that treatment and all compounds were recovered with the HR-GPC method.

Abstract: Rice hulls, a waste coproduct of the rice industry, is composed of 20% silica. The objectives of this study were to develop a method to recover silica from rice hull ash and produce silica gel, and to determine the physical and chemical properties of the rice hull silica gel (RHSG) relative to Trisyl 300, a commercial silica gel. Rice hull ash consisting of 61% silica and 36% carbon was dispersed in sodium hydroxide to dissolve the silica and produce a sodium silicate solution. The latter was titrated to pH 7 with 1M sulfuric acid to obtain a gel at neutral pH. The RHSG was aged, washed, and dried under specific conditions to get a final product that was slightly basic and had a moisture content >65%. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry indicated that silicon was the most abundant element present in RHSG and Trisyl 300. Elemental analyses by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy indicated a greater concentration of sodium and sulfur in RHSG relative to that in Trisyl 300. RHSG surface...
