TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that a singularity occurs in isoparametric finite elements if the mid-side nodes are moved sufficiently from their normal position to obtain a more accurate solution to the problem of determining the stress intensity at the tip of a crack.
Abstract: It is shown that a singularity occurs in isoparametric finite elements if the mid-side nodes are moved sufficiently from their normal position. By choosing the mid-side node positions on standard isoparametric elements so that the singularity occurs exactly at the corner of an element it is possible to obtain quite accurate solutions to the problem of determining the stress intensity at the tip of a crack. The solutions compare favourably with those obtained using some types of special crack tip elements, but are not as accurate as those given by a crack tip element based on the hybrid principle. However, the hybrid elements are more difficult to use.

TL;DR: The ability to create and deploy reproducible environments across these centers, a previously unmet need, makes Singularity a game changing development for computational science.
Abstract: Here we present Singularity, software developed to bring containers and reproducibility to scientific computing. Using Singularity containers, developers can work in reproducible environments of their choosing and design, and these complete environments can easily be copied and executed on other platforms. Singularity is an open source initiative that harnesses the expertise of system and software engineers and researchers alike, and integrates seamlessly into common workflows for both of these groups. As its primary use case, Singularity brings mobility of computing to both users and HPC centers, providing a secure means to capture and distribute software and compute environments. This ability to create and deploy reproducible environments across these centers, a previously unmet need, makes Singularity a game changing development for computational science.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system of either fermions or bosons interacting in one dimension by a two-body potential with periodic boundary conditions was investigated, and expressions for the one-particle density matrix at zero temperature and particular (nontrivial) values of the coupling constant $g, as a determinant of order $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}N$ were presented.
Abstract: We investigate exactly a system of either fermions or bosons interacting in one dimension by a two-body potential $V(r)=\frac{g}{{r}^{2}}$ with periodic boundary conditions. In addition to rederiving known results for correlation functions and thermodynamics in the thermodynamic limit, we present expressions for the one-particle density matrix at zero temperature and particular (nontrivial) values of the coupling constant $g$, as a determinant of order $N\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}N$. These concise expressions allow a discussion of the momentum distribution in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, for a case of repulsive bosons, the determinant is evaluated explicitly, exhibiting a weak (logarithmic) singularity at zero momentum, and vanishing outside of a "Fermi" surface.

TL;DR: In this article, a variational formulation and computational aspects of a three-dimensional finite-strain rod model, considered in Part I, are presented, which bypasses the singularity typically associated with the use of Euler angles.
Abstract: The variational formulation and computational aspects of a three-dimensional finite-strain rod model, considered in Part I, are presented. A particular parametrization is employed that bypasses the singularity typically associated with the use of Euler angles. As in the classical Kirchhoff-Love model, rotations have the standard interpretation of orthogonal, generally noncommutative, transformations. This is in contrast with alternative formulations proposed by Argyris et al. [5–8], based on the notion of semitangential rotation. Emphasis is placed on a geometric approach, which proves essential in the formulation of algorithms. In particular, the configuration update procedure becomes the algorithmic counterpart of the exponential map. The computational implementation relies on the formula for the exponential of a skew-symmetric matrix. Consistent linearization procedures are employed to obtain linearized weak forms of the balance equations. The geometric stiffness then becomes generally nonsymmetric as a result of the non-Euclidean character of the configuration space. However, complete symmetry is recovered at an equilibrium configuration, provided that the loading is conservative. An explicit condition for this to be the case is obtained. Numerical simulations including postbuckling behavior and nonconservative loading are also presented. Details pertaining to the implementation of the present formulation are also discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the basic features of the plasma-sheath transition and their relation to the Bohm criterion are discussed and illustrated from a simple cold-ion fluid model, and a rigorous kinetic analysis of the vicinity of the sheath edge allows one to generalize Bohm's criterion accounting not only for arbitrary ion and electron distributions, but also for general boundary conditions at the wall.
Abstract: In the limit of a small Debye length ( lambda D to 0) the analysis of the plasma boundary layer leads to a two-scale problem of a collision free sheath and of a quasi-neutral presheath. Bohm's criterion expresses a necessary condition for the formation of a stationary sheath in front of a negative absorbing wall. The basic features of the plasma-sheath transition and their relation to the Bohm criterion are discussed and illustrated from a simple cold-ion fluid model. A rigorous kinetic analysis of the vicinity of the sheath edge allows one to generalize Bohm's criterion accounting not only for arbitrary ion and electron distributions, but also for general boundary conditions at the wall. It is shown that the generalized sheath condition is (apart from special exceptions) marginally fulfilled and related to a sheath edge field singularity. Due to this singularity, smooth matching of the presheath and sheath solutions requires an additional transition layer. Previous investigations concerning particular problems of the plasma-sheath transition are reviewed in the light of the general relations.
