TL;DR: In this paper , a hand layup method was employed for the sample preparation from untreated, 5%, and 10% alkali-treated unidirectional and woven fiber orientations having 50:50 volume ratios.
Abstract: In the manufacturing process of innovative fiber-based composite materials, natural fibers are among the most commonly employed reinforcements. In this study, Enset/Sisal (E/S) fiber with a polyester matrix was used to develop the hybrid composites. Hand layup methods were employed for the sample preparation from untreated, 5%, and 10% alkali-treated unidirectional and woven fiber orientations having 50:50 volume ratios. The mechanical properties and water absorption of natural fiber hybrid composites were influenced by fiber treatment and orientation. In the present investigation, the result shows that treated and woven fiber orientation hybrid composites exhibit better mechanical properties than untreated and unidirectional E/S hybrid composites. The 5% NaOH-treated samples have higher tensile and flexural strength properties than the untreated and 10% alkali-treated composites, while the 5% NaOH-treated fiber composites have lower water absorption properties. The tensile and flexural strengths and impacts of 5% NaOH-treated composites were improved by 5.21%, 9.25%, and 5.98%, respectively, over untreated E/S hybrid composites. The morphological properties of the fracture surface of the composite were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

TL;DR: The papermaking potential of sisal fiber as a nonwood raw material was evaluated in this article, where chemical and morphological characteristics, as well as, the appropiate cooking conditions for pulping using the soda AQ process were determined.
Abstract: The papermaking potential of sisal fiber as a nonwood raw material was evaluated. The chemical and morphological characteristics, as well as, the appropiate cooking conditions for pulping using the soda AQ process were determined. Furthermore, values for the physical and mechanical properties of the sisal pulp were obtained. Unitary production costs were estimated for this process. The sisal fiber posseses a low lignin content but a high cellulose and hemicellulose content. The yield for the sisal pulping is higher than for wood fibers evaluated under similar pulping conditions. The tear and burst strength for the sisal fiber was greater than for caribean pine fibers, but tensile strength was similar. The estimated variable costs for production of the sisal pulp are lower than the ones reported in the literature for industrial trials, and slightly higher than for softwood fibers. The better fiber quality found in the sisal pulp can compensate its greater cost as a raw material.

TL;DR: In this paper, a microbial inhibition test using disc assays and a Delvo test were used to determine the antimicrobial properties of sisal extract and the results indicated that sisal has anti-microbial subst ances.
Abstract: A petroleum jelly product containing sisal extract (Agave sisalana) used to improve the skin integrity has been claimed to have antimicrobial properties, however, these claims have not been scientifically proven. The aim of the study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of the Agave sisalana containing petroleum jelly. A microbial inhibition test using disc assays and a Delvo test were used to determine the antimicrobial properties of sisal extract. The results i ndicated that sisal has anti-microbial subst ances. The sisal extract inhibited growth of Escherichia coli and Bacillus stearothermophilus. Results have also shown that the sisal's antimicrobial active ingredient is oil soluble. It w as co ncluded tha t the petroleum jelly product conta in antimicrobial properties but the sisal concentration in the product may not be sufficient for a complete growth inhibition of microorganisms.
