TL;DR: This human-in-the-loop experiment revealed that when provided with a high workload preview visualization as well as automated recommendations for workload mitigation, operators became fixated onheneedtogloballyoptimizetheirschedules and did notadequately weigh uncertainty in their decisions.
Abstract: Inthefuturevisionofallowingasingleoperatortocontrolmultipleunmannedvehicles(on land, in the air, or under water), it is not well understood how multiple vehicle control will affect operator workload, and what automated decision support strategies will improve, or possible degrade, operator performance. To this end, this paper presents the results of an experiment in which operators simultaneously managed four highly autonomous independent homogenous UAVs in a simulation, with the overall goal of destroying a predetermined set of targets within a limited time period. The primary factors under investigation were increasing levels of automation from manual to management-by-exception, manifested through a timeline visualization. Increasing levels of automation can reduce workload but they can also result in situation awareness degradation as well as complacency. This human-in-the-loop experiment revealed that when provided with a high workload preview visualization as well as automated recommendations for workload mitigation, operators becamefixatedontheneedtogloballyoptimizetheirschedules, anddidnotadequatelyweigh uncertainty in their decisions. These behaviors significantly degraded operator performance to the point that operators without any decision support performed better than those with probabilistic prediction information and the ability to negotiate potential outcomes.

TL;DR: Functional attributes of situational awareness in computer network security are discussed: dynamism and complexity, automation, realtime processing, multisource data fusion, heterogeneity, security visualisation, decision control, risk assessment, resolution, forecasting and prediction.
Abstract: The underpinning of situational awareness in computer networks is to identify adversaries, estimate impact of attacks, evaluate risks, understand situations and make sound decisions on how to protect valued assets swiftly and accurately. SA also underscores situation assessment in order to make accurate forecast in dynamic and complex environments. In this paper, situational awareness in computer network security is investigated. Functional attributes of situational awareness in computer network security are discussed: dynamism and complexity, automation, realtime processing, multisource data fusion, heterogeneity, security visualisation, decision control, risk assessment, resolution, forecasting and prediction.

01 Jul 2000TL;DR: Three different cannonical viewpoints into a 3D domain are defined to create a taxonomy of 3D displays and how the information processing demands of each display viewpoint, provides benefits and or imposes costs on four categories of tasks.
Abstract: Three different cannonical viewpoints into a 3D domain are defined to create a taxonomy of 3D displays. We then show how the information processing demands of each display viewpoint, provides benefits and or imposes costs on four categories of tasks, involving travel, image matching or situation awareness, visual search, and precise judgments. These task-display interactions are illustrated from experiments in aviation display design, battlefield judgments, and data visualization. Conclusions are offered regarding two possible ways of addressing the task-display interactions in design.

TL;DR: A new cyber-situational awareness framework relies on the OODA (observe, orient, decide, act) cycle to provide near real-time cognitive mapping for corporate environments.
Abstract: Organizations that rely on cyberspace as a mission-critical asset require advanced situational awareness to maintain a tactical advantage over emerging threats. A new cyber-situational awareness framework relies on the OODA (observe, orient, decide, act) cycle to provide near real-time cognitive mapping for corporate environments.

TL;DR: The authors present the concept of SA and how this concept relates to team reliability in dynamic environments and strategies for increasing SA and team reliability through education, training, and improved communication systems are discussed.
Abstract: To enhance disaster preparedness, hospitals are beginning to implement the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Although Hospital Emergency Incident Command System provides a template for disaster preparation, its successful implementation requires an understanding of situation awareness (SA) and high-reliability teams. The authors present the concept of SA and how this concept relates to team reliability in dynamic environments. Then strategies for increasing SA and team reliability through education, training, and improved communication systems are discussed.
