TL;DR: A set of measures to assess information complexity are presented that count information complexity as the combination of three basic factors: numeric size, variety, and relation; each factor is evaluated by the functions at three stages of brain information processing: perception, cognition, and action.
Abstract: : Information complexity associated with automation aids is a bottleneck that limits their use. While automation systems are designed to bring new functions to users and increase their capacities, automation also creates new tasks associated with acquiring and integrating information from displays. For example, a complex display increases information load to human operators and reduces usability. Thus, the efficiency of an automation system largely depends on the complexity of displayed information. To evaluate the costs and benefits of an automation aid, it is important to understand how much information is shown on the display, how users look at multiple information sources to build and maintain situation awareness, and whether the information is displayed in a compatible way so it can be integrated and understood easily without the user having to make internal conversions or calculations. In this paper, we present a set of measures to assess information complexity. The metrics count information complexity as the combination of three basic factors: numeric size, variety, and relation; each factor is evaluated by the functions at three stages of brain information processing: perception, cognition, and action. Ideally, these measures provide an objective method to evaluate automation systems for acquisition and design prototypes.

TL;DR: This framework adopts Semantic Web reasoning, fuzzy logic modeling, and genetic algorithms to handle, respectively, situational/contextual inference, uncertain input processing, and adaptation to the user's behavior to manage situation awareness.
Abstract: Situation awareness is a powerful paradigm that can efficiently exploit the increasing capabilities of handheld devices, such as smart phones and PDAs Indeed, accurate understanding of the current situation can allow the device to proactively provide information and propose services to users in mobility Of course, to recognize the situation is a challenging task, due to such factors as the variety of possible situations, uncertain and imprecise data, and different user's preferences and behavior In this framework, we propose a robust and general rule-based approach to manage situation awareness We adopt Semantic Web reasoning, fuzzy logic modeling, and genetic algorithms to handle, respectively, situational/contextual inference, uncertain input processing, and adaptation to the user's behavior We exploit an agent-oriented architecture so as to provide both functional and structural interoperability in an open environment The system is evaluated by means of a real-world case study concerning resource recommendation Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach

TL;DR: The proposed framework which is based on the multi-agent system manages to mitigate potential traffic congestions and minimize drivers’ average travel time in metropolitan areas and can be achieved by the utilization of a closed-loop management system.
Abstract: Transportation infrastructure is undergoing major revolutions in most metropolitan areas, which demands for improved operational strategies to meet requirements of smart cities. Such requirements include more convenience more travelers, and higher levels of security, reliability, economics, and societal sustainability in our communities. Given that the wide-area situational awareness is enabled by advanced information and communication technologies, this paper develops a hierarchical operation framework for regulating traffic signals effectively and flexibly in dynamic traffic conditions. The proposed framework which is based on the multi-agent system manages to mitigate potential traffic congestions and minimize drivers’ average travel time in metropolitan areas. Further traffic efficiency improvements can be achieved by the utilization of a closed-loop management system. Interactive simulations are conducted in this paper to examine the performance of the proposed framework in a real-world transportation system.

TL;DR: In view of the increase in air traffic, there has been a great deal of work by the nations of the world, under the auspices of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), toward developing the concept for a future air navigation infrastructure to serve world-wide civil aviation into the next century as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In view of the increase in air traffic, there has been a great deal of work by the nations of the world, under the auspices of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), toward developing the concept for a future air navigation infrastructure to serve world-wide civil aviation into the next century. The benefits of CNS/ATM systems will be great as new air routes are opened and more dynamic and flexible flight operations are accommodated the world over. Even though the concept is well defined and implementation is beginning, only technical manuals are available to describe and advance the system concept. This book describes the worlds vision for the Future Air Navigation System (FANS) and is the first text of its kind dedicated solely to Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management, the CNS/ATM systems concept. In addition to the technical issues associated with CNS/ATM systems concepts, the book also examines institutional, economic, labor and human factors issues.
