TL;DR: The need for further investigation of the role of instant messaging interfaces both on task performance and situation awareness, and how the associated problems could be ameliorated through adaptive display design is highlighted.
Abstract: In the recent development of a human-in-the-loop simulation test bed designed to examine human performance issues for supervisory control of the Navy's new Tactical Tomahawk missile, measurements of operator situation awareness (SA) and workload through secondary tasking were taken through an embedded instant messaging program. Instant message interfaces (otherwise known as "chat"), already a means of communication between Navy ships, allow researchers to query users in real-time in a natural, ecologic setting, and thus provide more realistic and unobtrusive measurements. However, in the course of this testing, results revealed that some subjects fixated on the real-time instant messaging secondary task instead of the primary task of missile control, leading to the overall degradation of mission performance as well as a loss of SA. While this research effort was the first to quantify command and control performance degradation as a result of instant messaging, the military has recognized that in its netwo...

TL;DR: The development of tool suites for supporting high levels of situation awareness in military command and control are presented to illustrate the use of the SA-Oriented Design process for translating the results of cognitive task analyses into to user-centered system designs.
Abstract: Situation awareness is a fundamental construct driving human decision making in complex, dynamic environments. By creating designs that enhance an operator's awareness of what is happening in a giv...

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Monte Carlo simulation of safety relevant air traffic scenarios is a viable approach for systemic accident assessment and particularly focuses on the effectiveness of a runway incursion alert system that warns an air traffic controller.

TL;DR: The objective of this paper is to discuss why the transfer of this concept from its safety and combat origins to the complex, heterogeneous emergency management structure of the United States would be exceedingly difficult, and that short term strategies based on the assumption that shared situational awareness would be easily achieved are doomed to failure.
Abstract: The US is replacing its historical federalist concept of emergency management where primary responsibility resides with state and local governments and their emergency management and first responder resources for coordinating emergency response and recovery, supported by the resources federal government (coordinated by FEMA) with a homeland security national response system where response to events is controlled by DHS using a military command and control model. This model assumes that those controlling and coordinating the response and recovery would attain and maintain an accurate, shared common operating picture and situational awareness. The objective of this paper is to discuss why the transfer of this concept from its safety and combat origins to the complex, heterogeneous emergency management structure of the United States would would be exceedingly difficult, and that short term strategies based on the assumption that shared situational awareness would be easily achieved are doomed to failure

TL;DR: A theory encompassing both a definition of SA and a model of situation assessment and a number of cognitive biases that result from the knowledge matching process are discussed, as are implications for partial report measures of situation awareness.
Abstract: Measures of pilot situation awareness (SA) are needed in order to know whether new concepts in display design help pilots keep track of rapidly changing tactical situations. In order to measure SA,...
