Abstract: Human performance and supervisory control strategies were examined using the RoboFlag simulation environment. In an emulation of a multiple unmanned vehicle mission, a single operator supervised a team of six robots using automated modes or "plays" as well as manual control. Simplified form of a delegation type interface, Playbook, was used. Effects on user performance of two factors, opponent "posture" (offensive, defensive, or mixed) and environmental uncertainty (visual range of the robots: low, medium, or high), were examined in 18 participants who completed five mission trials in each of the nine combinations of these factors. Objective performance measures and subjective assessments of mental workload and situation awareness were obtained from each participant. Opponent posture had a significant effect on the percent of missions successfully completed and the duration of the games. Both opponent posture and visual range also significantly affected the use of manual and automated control strategies. Operator strategy selection and implementation are discussed with regard to performance data and the design of supervisory control interfaces that support flexible task delegation.

Abstract: Despite well over two decades of academic research, situation awareness in complex collaborative environments remains ambiguous. Recent systems-based models of distributed situation awareness have attempted to address this; however, further effort is required in clarifying exactly how situation awareness operates in complex socio-technical systems. One pertinent issue regards what the ‘distributed’ situational picture looks like from the perspective of each component of the system and how it differs amongst team members. Is the same picture ‘shared’ across team members, or do they have different, but compatible, views on the situation? This article tackles this question by presenting a distributed cognition-inspired systems-based model of situation awareness in collaborative systems, along with an accompanying modelling approach, the propositional network methodology. Abstract: The goal of our project is to create a set of next-generation cyber situational-awareness capabilities with applications to other domains in the long term. The objective is to improve the decision-making process to enable decision makers to choose better actions. To this end, we put extensive effort into making certain that we had feedback fromnetwork analysts and managers and understand what their genuine needs are. This article discusses the cognitive task-analysis methodology that we followed to acquire feedback from the analysts. This article also provides the details we acquired from the analysts on their processes, goals, concerns, the data and metadata that they analyze. Finally, we describe the generation of a novel task-flow diagram representing the activities of the target user base.

Abstract: This paper describes MultiUAV, a simulation that is capable of simulating multiple unmanned aerospace vehicles which cooperate to accomplish a predefined mission. The simulation was constructed using the Mathwork's Simulink simulation software. Construction of the simulation satisfied the need for a simulation environment that researchers can use to implement and analyze cooperative control algorithms. The simulation is implemented in a hierarchical manner with inter-vehicle communication explicitly modeled. During construction of MultiUAV, issues concerning memory usage and functional encapsulation were addressed. MultiUAV includes plotting tools and links to an external program for post-simulation analysis. Each of the vehicle simulations include six-degree-of-freedom dynamics and embedded flight software. The embedded flight software consists of a collection of managers (agents) that control situational awareness and responses of the vehicles. Managers included in the simulation are: Tactical Maneuvering, Sensor, Target, Cooperation, Route and Weapons.

Abstract: During a disastrous event, such as an earthquake or river flooding, information on what happened, who was affected and how, where help is needed, and how to aid people who were affected, is crucial. While communication is important in such times of crisis, damage to infrastructure such as telephone lines makes it difficult for authorities and victims to communicate. Microblogging has played a critical role as an important communication platform during crises when other media has failed. We demonstrate our ESA (Emergency Situation Awareness) system that mines microblogs in real-time to extract and visualise useful information about incidents and their impact on the community in order to equip the right authorities and the general public with situational awareness.
