TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a different way to model the link between aircraft configuration and perceived workload, which is related to information processing theory and limited capacity of cognitive resources and sequential processing of information define what can be overload.
Abstract: One way to improve both capacity and safety in air traffic control (ATC) implies to assist the human operator, while he remains in the decision loop. Designing high performance tools requires a precise tuning in order to interface them efficiently and non-intrusively with the controller, especially in heavy workload contexts. To this end, knowledge of workload sources and fluctuations is essential and has triggered a large number of studies. Surprisingly, there is no universally accepted definition of mental workload: a consensus exists merely to define it as the "cost" of a given task for the operator. Concept of mental load is related to information processing theory Limited capacity of cognitive resources and sequential processing of information define what can be overload. an excessive demand on perceptual and cognitive resources (visual and auditory perception, memory and attention, among others) with respect to information processing capacities. In the present study, we would like to propose a different way to model the link between aircraft configuration and perceived workload.

TL;DR: This work proposes a novel and general architecture for an early warning system and describes an implementation of this architecture for a real scenario, using Twitter as source of information for the detection of earthquakes on the Italian territory.
Abstract: Social Sensing is based on the idea that communities or groups of people provide a set of information similar to those obtainable from a single sensor. This amount of information generate a complex and adequate knowledge of one or more specific issues. A possible field of application for Social Sensing is Emergency Management. By using the Social Media it is possible to gather updated information about emerging situations of danger, in order to gain greater situational awareness and to alert interested parties promptly or verify information obtained through other channels. A system able to timely detect events that are of social concern can be referred to as an Early Warning system. In this work we propose a novel and general architecture for an early warning system and, as a proof-of-concept, we describe an implementation of this architecture for a real scenario. We use Twitter as source of information for the detection of earthquakes on the Italian territory. We compare our results with official data provided by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the authority responsible for the monitoring of seismic events in Italy. Results show an high ability of the system in the timely detection of events with magnitude equal or greater than 3.5 Richter with only 10% of False Positives.

TL;DR: This work proposes an opportunistic spatio-temporal event processing system that uses prediction-based continuous query handling and provides timely information about a consumer's current position by hiding computation latency for processing recent events.
Abstract: With the proliferation of mobile devices and sensors, mobile situation awareness is becoming an important class of applications. The key requirement of this class of applications is low-latency processing of events stemming from sensor data in order to provide timely situational information to mobile users. To satisfy the latency requirement, we propose an opportunistic spatio-temporal event processing system that uses prediction-based continuous query handling. Our system predicts future query regions for moving consumers and starts processing events early so that the live situational information is available when the consumer reaches the future location. In contrast to existing systems, our system provides timely information about a consumer's current position by hiding computation latency for processing recent events. To evaluate our system, we measure the quality of results and timeliness of live situational information with various query parameters. Our evaluation shows that we can achieve highly meaningful query results with near-zero latency in most cases.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and methods for providing personnel communications management within an enterprise or group of related enterprises during crisis situations are described, including event management, shared situational awareness, personnel tracking, and unified crisis notification management to multiple users.
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for providing personnel communications management within an enterprise or group of related enterprises during crisis situations. In particular, the systems and methods provide event management, shared situational awareness, personnel tracking, and unified crisis notification management to multiple users.
