TL;DR: In this paper, a "situational" perspective on employee attitudes was used to interpret the relationship between age and work satisfaction among 434 employees of a Federal Government agency, and distinct age-satisfaction curves were discovered among three employee groups: a U-shaped curve among nonprofessionals, an upward-sloping double-bend curve among elite professionals, and a downward sloping curve among ordinary professionals.
Abstract: A "situational"perspective on employee attitudes is used to interpret the relationship between age and work satisfaction among 434 employees of a Federal Government agency. Distinct age-satisfaction curves are discovered among three employee groups: a U-shaped curve among nonprofessionals, an upward-sloping double-bend curve among elite professionals, and a downward sloping curve among ordinary professionals. Employee perceptions of management climate, mobility possibilities, and personal influence all vary by subcontext and determine level of work satisfaction. Results are seen as supporting a situational rather than ontogenetic explanation of work satisfaction.

TL;DR: The authors summarized the results of three studies that explore how certain psychological and situational factors influence people's responses to various emotional support strategies. But is what counts as sensitive emotional support like beauty, in the eye of the beholder?
Abstract: W hen feeling hurt, disappointed, or upset, virtually everyone would like to receive sensitive emotional support from caring others. But is what counts as sensitive emotional support like beauty—that is, in the eye of the beholder? Do people differ substantially in their views about the type of emotional support that makes them feel better, or do most people have similar ideas about what counts as helpful (and unhelpful) emotional support? This chapter contributes to answering this question by summarizing the results of three studies that explore how certain psychological and situational factors influence people’s responses to various emotional support strategies.

TL;DR: This paper showed that stereotypes do not appear to affect self-expectations; instead, they appear to foster a climate of mistrust that results in depressed performance, and interventions that ameliorate the situation of mistrust, such as the presence of educators who are competent minority group members, tend to raise levels of performance.
Abstract: This article focuses on two aspects of Allport's (1954) investigation of the psychology of being a target of prejudice. Whereas most researchers in this area view Allport as an expectancy theorist, we revisit another aspect of Allport's theory: the situational threat posed by negative stereotypes. First, we examine this issue, as it applies to the academic underachievement of negatively stereotyped groups, by contrasting the situational threat posed by stereotypes with traditional and current expectancy-oriented conceptions. Second, we show that stereotypes do not appear to affect self-expectations; instead, they appear to foster a climate of mistrust that results in depressed performance. Finally, we discuss how interventions that ameliorate the climate of mistrust, such as the presence of educators who are competent minority group members, tend to raise levels of performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the intended and unintended effects of print comparative political advertising on political decision-making, voting preferences, and situational election involvement were examined. And the results indicated that comparative advertising reduced targeted-candidate voting preferences while avoiding most forms of voter backlash.
Abstract: An experiment examined intended and unintended effects of print comparative political advertising on political decision-making, voting preferences, and situational election involvement. Results suggested that comparative advertising reduces targeted-candidate voting preferences while avoiding most forms of voter backlash. Voter backlash was evidenced, however, in participants' perceptions that the sponsoring candidate was mean-spirited. Comparative advertising significantly increased participants' situational election involvement.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused explicitly on the interaction between three situational characteristics: time pressure, skill variety, and feedback from supervisors, and found direct positive correlations between time pressure and skill variety with idea generation and implementation.
Abstract: Workplace changes necessitate employees' innovative behavior. Developing and implementing new ideas can be enhanced by focusing on situational characteristics and adjusting them to improve employees' working conditions. To date, mostly interactions between situational and personal characteristics on innovative behavior have been researched. This study focused explicitly on the interaction between 3 situational characteristics: time pressure, skill variety, and feedback from supervisors. A questionnaire study was administered to 81 employees (age range 40–64 years) from different organizations. Results indicated direct positive correlations between time pressure and skill variety with idea generation and implementation. Feedback from supervisors moderated the positive relationships while controlling for effects of creative thinking abilities. Implications are explored.
