TL;DR: This paper first studies the recognition of the emotions involved in human speech, then it applies this emotion recognition algorithm to a computer agent that plays a character role in the interactive movie system that is developing.
Abstract: Nonverbal information, such as the emotions, plays an essential role in human communication. Unfortunately, only the verbal aspect of communication has been focused on in communications between humans and computer agents. In the future, however, it is expected that computer agents will have nonverbal as well as verbal communication capabilities. In this paper, we first study the recognition of the emotions involved in human speech. Then we apply this emotion recognition algorithm to a computer agent that plays a character role in the interactive movie system that we are developing.

TL;DR: Experimental results have shown that the associated routines continuously improve their performance during their work even after supervised training is halted, and an experimental system for handprinted Chinese character recognition based on the novel concept has been built.
Abstract: This paper is focused on imitation of human psychological process in machine recognition of Chinese characters. Some results of research on human Chinese character recognition have been discussed and unified into a compound mechanism with an adaptive and self-developing nature. A machine imitation model has been proposed for Chinese character recognition with different routines. By some simplification but with the crucial feature of the model being retained, an experimental system for handprinted Chinese character recognition based on the novel concept has been built. Experimental results have shown that the associated routines continuously improve their performance during their work even after supervised training is halted. The routine of the global pattern approach eventually learns most of the classes and the recognition process gradually shifts from the subpattern approach to the global pattern approach.

TL;DR: A method for region-based segmentation of sketch map objects as part of the sketch map understanding process that is robust to gaps in the drawing and can even handle open-ended streets.
Abstract: Sketch maps are an intuitive way to display and communicate geographic data and an automatic processing is of great benefit for human-computer interaction This paper presents a method for segmentation of sketch map objects as part of the sketch map understanding process We use region-based segmentation that is robust to gaps in the drawing and can even handle open-ended streets To evaluate this approach, we manually generated a ground truth for 20 maps and conducted a preliminary quantitative performance study

TL;DR: The diagram sketching tool InkKit is extended to combine software engineering sketches of different types to support software design processes by providing a sketch-based approach that allows the iterative creation of multiple outputs interacting with one another from the inter-linked models.
Abstract: Diagrams are often used to model complex systems: in many cases several different types of diagrams are used to model different aspects of the system. These diagrams, perhaps from multiple stakeholders of different specialties, must be combined to achieve a full abstract representation of the system. Many CAD tools offer multi-diagram integration; however, sketch-based diagramming tools are yet to tackle this difficult integration problem. We extend the diagram sketching tool InkKit to combine software engineering sketches of different types. Our extensions support software design processes by providing a sketch-based approach that allows the iterative creation of multiple outputs interacting with one another from the inter-linked models. We demonstrate that InkKit can generate a functional system consisting of a user interface with processes to submit and retrieve data from a database from sketched user interfaces designs and sketched entity relationship diagrams.
