01 Jun 2008TL;DR: A novel algorithm is proposed that combines two separate methods to segment expressions, one of which is based on structural information and the other on partial recognition, and improves the traditional algorithm at the stage of recognition, which consists of a substance recognizer and a character recognizer.
Abstract: In this paper, we study the major modules of on-line handwritten chemical expressions recognition. We propose a novel algorithm that combines two separate methods to segment expressions, one of which is based on structural information and the other on partial recognition. The algorithm improves the traditional algorithm at the stage of recognition, which consists of a substance recognizer and a character recognizer. To meet the demand of actual applications, the paper also designs a standard feature set to deal with the related issues and presents a flexible process of human-computer interaction to help users modify the recognition result. The experimental results show that the presented algorithm is reliable.

11 Sep 2008TL;DR: An integrated environment is described, conceived as a multi agent system, that brings together sketch recognition functionalities and decision support facilities that are exploited both for managing the process of recognition of sketched objects, and for supporting users in solving decisional problems.
Abstract: Sketching is a powerful means to represent objects and reason on them. In this paper we describe an integrated environment, conceived as a multi agent system, that brings together sketch recognition functionalities and decision support facilities. In this environment, intelligent agents are exploited both for managing the process of recognition of the sketched objects, and for supporting users in solving decisional problems. We explain our approach and its potential by means of a running example taken from the domain of building's safety.

03 Oct 2011TL;DR: A sketch-based articulated figure animation tool is introduced that provides users with an intuitive interface to pose and animate skeletons of any topology easily and how sketch- and depth ambiguity can be resolved using disambiguation information and pressure sensitivity.
Abstract: Animating models using traditional 3D modelling and animation packages is complex and difficult for novice users to use. A sketch-based articulated figure animation tool is introduced that provides users with an intuitive interface to pose and animate skeletons of any topology easily. An isomorphic mapping between the sketch and the skeleton is determined and a recursive algorithm poses the skeleton so that it matches the pose sketched. It is shown how sketch- and depth ambiguity can be resolved using disambiguation information and pressure sensitivity. The tool developed allowed novice users to successfully and easily sketch stick figures to pose articulated figures for sketch-based animation.

11 Dec 2005TL;DR: This paper proposes a threshold based FSM by incorporating some additional features in the FSM in terms of different thresholds, which greatly enhance the gesture recognition accuracy.
Abstract: Vision-based hand gesture recognition is a popular research topic for human-computer interaction (HCI). Gestures provide a rich and intuitive form of interaction for controlling robots. We have earlier developed a gesture model as a sequence of key frames each bearing information about its duration. These constitute a finite state machine (FSM). In this paper we propose a threshold based FSM by incorporating some additional features in the FSM. These additional features are in terms of different thresholds. These new features greatly enhance the gesture recognition accuracy. We get recognition rate of about 96%, which demonstrate that our proposed threshold FSM is ideal for Human Computer Interaction (HCI) platform.
