TL;DR: The goal of stimulus control instructions is to help the insomniac learn to fall asleep quickly and to maintain sleep as discussed by the authors, by strengthening the bed as a cue for sleep.
Abstract: The goals of stimulus control instructions are to help the insomniac learn to fall asleep quickly and to maintain sleep. These goals are reached by strengthening the bed as a cue for sleep, weakening it as a cue for activities that might interfere with sleep, and helping the insomniac acquire a consistent sleep rhythm. Although there are many causes of insomnia, poor sleep habits are often an important contributor.

TL;DR: In this paper, a watchdog function is used to monitor the microprocessor's activity and save power by shutting down many of the input-sensing circuits, and the watchdog function does not accept sleep commands unless it stands in the proper timing relationship to a signal on the strobe pin.
Abstract: A system which includes a microprocessor (or microcontroller) and an auxiliary chip which monitors the system power supply voltage and performs related functions for the microprocessor, and also provides a watchdog function to monitor the microprocessor's activity. The auxiliary chip itself can put to sleep by the microprocessor to minimize power consumption. The sleep mode of the auxiliary chip saves power by shutting down many of the input-sensing circuits, and the watchdog function. The sleep command is not accepted unless it stands in the proper timing relationship to a signal on the strobe pin. This permits the power savings of the sleep mode to be realized, without any risk of the system being placed in the sleep mode due to an out-of-control system condition.

TL;DR: The code for sleep and wakeup primitives is presented, exercised by years of active use and by a verification system, to synchronise processes on a symmetric shared-memory multiprocessor system.
Abstract: The problem of enabling asleepingprocess on a shared-memory multiprocessor is a difficult one, especially if the process is to be awak ened by an interrupt-time event. We present here the code for sleep and wakeup primitives that we use in our multiprocessor system. The code has been exercised by years of active use and by a verification system. Our problem is to synchronise processes on a symmetric shared-memory multiproces sor. Processes suspend execution, or sleep, while awaiting an enabling event such as an I/O interrupt. When the event occurs, the process is issued a wakeup to resume its exe cution. During these events, other processes may be running and other interrupts occurring on other processors. More specifically, we wish to implement subroutines called sleep, callable by a pro cess to relinquish control of its current processor, and wakeup, callable by another pro cess or an interrupt to resume the execution of a suspended process. The calling con ventions of these subroutines will remain unspecified for the moment.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how flight crews organize their sleep during layovers on long-haul trips and found that there are physiologically and environmentally determined preferred sleep times within a layover.
Abstract: How flight crews organize their sleep during layovers on long-haul trips is documented. Additionally, environmental and physiological constraints on sleep are examined. In the trips studied, duty periods averaging 10.3 hr alternated with layovers averaging 24.8 hr, which typically included two subject-defined sleep episodes. The circadian system had a greater influence on the timing and duration of first-sleeps than second-sleeps. There was also a preference for sleeping during the local night. The time of falling asleep for second-sleeps was related primarily to the amount of sleep already obtained in the layover, and their duration depended on the amount of time remaining in the layover. For both first- and second-sleeps, sleep durations were longer when subjects fell asleep earlier with respect to the minimum of the circadian temperature cycle. Naps reported during layovers and on the flight deck may be a useful strategy for reducing cumulative sleep loss. The circadian system was not able to synchronize with the rapid series of time-zone shifts. The sleep/wake cycle was forced to adopt a period different from that of the circadian system. Flight and duty time regulations are a means of ensuring that reasonable minimum rest periods are provided. This study clearly documents that there are physiologically and environmentally determined preferred sleep times within a layover. The actual time available for sleep is thus less than the scheduled rest period.

TL;DR: In this paper, the power supply of a LAN microcomputer system is divided into a VccI power line 7 which is held on even during sleep, and a VCCII power line 8 to be turned off during the sleep by an on/off circuit.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a watch dog timer device for a LAN microcomputer system, etc, for car free from risk of the battery being exhausting, by lessening the current consumption in the system during the sleep CONSTITUTION:The power supplied from a power supply circuit 3 of a microcomputer system is divided into a VccI power line 7, which is held turned on even during the sleep, and a VccII power line 8 to be turned off during the sleep by a VccII on/off circuit 6, and also a watch dog timer 2 is furnished independent from the microcomputer 1, and the power supply of this watch dog timer 2 is connected with the VccII power line 8 When the microcomputer system is put in sleep state, the power supply of the watch dog timer 2 is turned off automatically, which should reduce the current consumption during the sleep and also eliminates any pseudo PRUN signal generator circuit for preventing misdiagnostic motions of the watch dog timer 2 when the system is in sleep Thus the current consumption can be reduced accordingly

TL;DR: A study to see whether temazepam would improve daytime sleep during a scheduled rest period compared to placebo showed a significant increase in the average sleep period and the quality of sleep was improved yet there was no difference in subjective alertness between the groups six hours post ingestion.
Abstract: Airborne operations may demand an intense level of activity prior to parachuting. In addition the movement of troops to the theatre of operations may well involve the crossing of several time zones. These factors may well deprive the troops of sleep. Furthermore, a parachute assault may well be at night leading to a long period without rest. Scheduled sleep may help ameliorate this sleep deprivation. Studies have shown that daytime sleep prior to overnight activity can improve performance. A study was undertaken to see whether temazepam would improve daytime sleep during a scheduled rest period compared to placebo. The results showed a significant increase in the average sleep period in the group taking 20mg and 10mg of temazepan compared to placebo. The quality of sleep was also improved yet there was no difference in subjective alertness between the groups six hours post ingestion. Language: en

TL;DR: In this paper, a power supply control command designating a power interrupt time is sent from one node station to a downstream node station, and the power supply command recognition section 11 in downstream node stations 1 recognizes the command to be the power interrupt control command and sets the designated power supply interrupt time to a timer 12 and allows the timer to start the time count operation simultaneously.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To facilitate the operation of power supply for the stop and restart of the operation by providing a recognition section for power interrupt command and a sleep timer to a node station. CONSTITUTION:When a power supply control command designating a power interrupt time is sent from one node station, a power supply command recognition section 11 in a downstream node station 1 recognizes the command to be the power supply control command and sets the designated power supply interrupt time to a timer 12 and allows the timer to start the time count operation simultaneously. Moreover, the power supply command recognition section 11 gives a command of power supply interruption to a communication control section 14. The communication control section 14 takes a maximum timing when the power supply control command is relayed to a downstream transmission line from a transmission section 16 of its own node station and sends an acknowledge signal representing power interrupt to a power supply control section 13. Then the power supply control section 13 interrupts the power supply except for a timer 12 and the own control section 13 and when the timer 12 expires, the power supply control section 13 supplies all interrupted power supply. Thus, the power supply operation is facilitated.

TL;DR: In this paper, an educationally oriented treatment program termed "sleep behavior management" (SBM) is used in the treatment of insomnia. But the program is not suitable for individuals with sleep disorders.
Abstract: We have used an educationally oriented treatment program termed “sleep behavior management” (SBM) in the treatment of insomnia. The program emphasizes factors known to influence sleep and their integration into an individual’s life-style. SBM is a structured treatment, with active patient involvement and carefully selected behaviors. The basic premise of SBM is the interdependence of sleep and waking behaviors. Although sleep cannot be directly controlled, substantial influence over it can be obtained by manipulating waking behavior. Patients are taught to systematically implement sleep behavior principles to improve sleep quality and quantity. At the end of therapy, independent management of sleep behavior is possible and expected.
