TL;DR: In this article, a television receiver provides a prominent visual indication that it is about to automatically turn off by displaying and gradually enlarging at least one graphically generated margin of the OSD display.
Abstract: It is desirable that a television receiver provide a prominent visual indication that it is about to automatically turn "off". On-screen display (OSD) circuitry automatically reduces the viewable picture area to a small area before turning off the receiver. Reduction of the viewable area may be performed by displaying and gradually enlarging at least one graphically-generated margin of the OSD display.

TL;DR: In this article, a method and an apparatus for utilising the different wake/sleep phases of a human being for the actuation or control of electronic equipment, in particular, a solution is provided with which the course of waking and sleeping of a subject can be selectively used for influencing equipment with which in particular the respectively current and/or pre-calculable wake or sleep phase of the subject to be woken can be coordinated with the waking behaviour of a coupled alarm clock.
Abstract: Using a method and an apparatus for utilising the different wake/sleep phases of a human being for the actuation or control of electronic equipment, in particular, a solution is to be provided with which the course of waking and sleeping of a subject can be selectively used for influencing equipment with which in particular the respectively current and/or pre-calculable wake/sleep phase of a subject to be woken can be coordinated with the waking behaviour of a coupled alarm clock. This is achieved in that data related to the subject or the body, time intervals and/or fixed times can be entered in a control unit with a data processing program, and in that transmission, control, switching and/or triggering pulses are caused directly or via the data processing program.

TL;DR: In this article, the procedure for enabling a sleeping person to wake within a predetermined time (tz) when roused by a suitable signal is designed to minimise attendant stress by arranging the preset time to coincide with the naturally occurring repetitive phases of light sleep.
Abstract: The procedure for enabling a sleeping person to wake within a predetermined time (tz) when roused by a suitable signal is designed to minimise attendant stress by arranging the preset time (tz) to coincide with the naturally occurring repetitive phases of light sleep i.e. REM sleep-phasers (tREM). The individual's cyclic pattern of REM and non-REM sleep is established over a reference period using suitably recorded indicators e.g. eye movement, pulse, breathing etc. and the data is programmed into an armband or ear-clip pulse rate monitor. The preset waking time (tz) is always chosen to suit the pattern with any temporary alteration of the natural cycle effected by a brief interruption of sleep by signal during a non-REM phase. USE/ADVANTAGE - Assists waking experience to be as pleasant as possible. Alternation of normal cycle during non-REM i.e. deep-sleep phase is generally not noticed by sleeper.

Abstract: : The objective of sleep logistics is to ensure that fighting men and women at all levels obtain sufficient sleep to maintain combat effectiveness. Special warfare missions frequently involve night work and arduous operational schedules. This User's Guide explains selected sleep management techniques for use during military operations, with particular emphasis on special operations mission. The Guide will assist field commanders in using sleep logistics to prevent compromise of mission accomplishment due to sleep deprivation. In addition, it provides techniques for assessing severity of sleep debt and compensating for its ill effects... Sleep management, Sleep logistics, Sleep loss.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an approach to eliminate the need of restarting a timer by an arrangement wherein a microcomputer having a sleep timer function delays the time for interrupting the power supply from a consumer electronic apparatus based on a data received from a user through a local keyboard or from an infrared receiver.
Abstract: PURPOSE: To eliminate the need of restarting a timer by an arrangement wherein a microcomputer having a sleep timer function delays the time for interrupting the power supply from a consumer electronic apparatus based on a data received from a user through a local keyboard or from an infrared receiver. CONSTITUTION: A control microcomputer 110 incorporates a timer 114 having sleep timer function and power supply is interrupted automatically from a consumer electronic apparatus, e.g. TV, radio or cooler, when the timer times up. On the other hand, when the control microcomputer 110 receives a signal from an IR receiver 119 being actuated through a keyboard 118 or a remote control transmitter 128, a time initially set in the timer 114 is delayed. Consequently, the power supply is prevented from being interrupted when a user can not sleep.

TL;DR: In this article, a remote control input section was used to detect the user's sleep and prevent the useless consumption of electric power, and a control section controlled a power supply circuit to turn off a power source when there was no response within a prescribed time.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To surely detect the user's sleep and to prevent the useless consumption of electric power. CONSTITUTION:The message accelerating the sleep is supplied at every prescribed time from a voice synthesizing circuit 5 to a headphone 3. The message confirming the sleep is outputted by the voice synthesizing circuit 5 to the headphone 3. The user operates the switch of a remote control input section 7 and responds with the message confirming the sleep when the user does not fall into sleep yet. A control section 4 continues the operation when there is this response. The control section controls a power supply circuit 8 to turn off a power source when there is no response within the prescribed time.

TL;DR: In this article, a sleep timer is activated automatically by providing a timer device turning off a power supply after the lapse of a prescribed time after reaching the operating state, and an illuminance detector bringing the timer set into the operating states when the surrounding illumination is darker than a prescribed illumination.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To activate a sleep timer automatically by providing a timer device turning off a power supply after the lapse of a prescribed time after reaching the operating state, an illuminance detector bringing the timer set into the operating state when the surrounding illuminance is darker than a prescribed illuminance and a changeover device validating or invalidating the sleep timer manually. CONSTITUTION:A surrounding illuminance detected by an illuminance sensor 3 is compared with a prescribed illuminance at an illuminance detector 4, and a timer device 5 enters the operating state when the surrounding illuminance is darker than the prescribed illuminance. The timer device 5 deenergizes a power supply device 2 after lapse of a prescribed time after entering the operating state to activate the sleep timer. When a changeover device 6 is thrown to one position, the timer device is operated normally and when the changeover device 6 is thrown to the other position, the timer device is normally inoperative independently of the output of the illuminance detector 4. Thus, when the surrounding gets dark, the sleep timer is automatically operated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to set the ringing time of the bell of a telephone set at required time to prevent the bell from being left without resetting by providing a connecting section 6 between a telephone line 1 and telephone set 2 and switching the connecting section between the opened and closed states by means of a timer section 8 in accordance with the set time.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To set the ringing time of the bell of a telephone set at required time to prevent the bell from being left without resetting by providing a connecting section 6 between a telephone line 1 and telephone set 2 and switching the connecting section between the opened and closed states by means of a timer section 8 in accordance with the set time. CONSTITUTION:The time of a timer section 8 is set by means of an operating section 9 so that the bell of a telephone set 2 can be set to an actuated state during a fixed period of time from 11 P.M. to 6 A.M. and unactuated state in the other period of time when, for example, the ringing of the bell of a telephone set is to be stopped at night. The set time can be confirmed on a displaying section 10. When the section 8 is actuated, a connecting section 6 is opened and the telephone set 2 is not connected to a telephone line 1. When an incoming call arrives at the line 1 in such state, an incoming call detecting section 5 detects the call and a central processing section 4 turns on a indicator lamp 11 so as to inform the subscriber of the incoming call visually. Therefore, the subscriber of this telephone set is not disturbed when he has a sleep, because no sound is produced, but an indicator lamp 11 is turned on, even when an incoming call arrives. When one of his family is out of bed, the one can recognize the arrival of the incoming call from the lamp 11.
