Abstract: Sleep is a composite of physiological and behavioral processes that undergo substantial changes during and after pregnancy These changes might lead to sleep disorders and adverse pregnancy outcomes Several studies have investigated this issue; however, they were restricted to subjective measurements or short-term actigraphy methods This is insufficient for a longitudinal maternal sleep quality evaluation A longitudinal study: 1) requires a long-term data collection approach to acquire data from everyday routines of mothers and 2) demands a sleep quality assessment method exploiting a large volume of multivariate data to assess sleep adaptations and overall sleep quality In this paper, we present an Internet-of-Things-based long-term monitoring system to perform an objective sleep quality assessment We conduct longitudinal monitoring, where 20 pregnant mothers are remotely monitored for six months of pregnancy and one month postpartum To evaluate sleep quality adaptations, we: 1) extract several sleep attributes and study their variations during the monitoring and 2) propose a semi-supervised machine learning approach to create a personalized sleep model for each subject The model provides an abnormality score, which allows an explicit representation of the sleep quality in a clinical routine, reflecting possible sleep quality degradation with respect to her own data Sleep data of 13 participants (out of 20) are included in our analysis, as their data are adequate for the study, including 17215±3329 days of sleep data per person Our fine-grained objective measurements indicate that the sleep duration and sleep efficiency are deteriorated in pregnancy and notably in postpartum In comparison to the mid of the second trimester, the sleep model indicates the increase of sleep abnormality at the end of pregnancy (287 times) and postpartum (562 times) We also show that the model enables individualized and effective care for sleep disturbances during pregnancy, as compared to a baseline method

Abstract: A plurality of electronic control units is continuously supplied with electric power to be capable of communication one another even when respective controlled devices are in inoperative condition. Each ECU transmits a sleep NG information along with its device ID when it not allowed to remain in the sleep mode. An abnormality detection unit connected to the ECUs through communication lines monitors the sleep NG information of each ECU to detect the ECU remaining activated for more than a wait period which is required for the ECU to shift to the sleep mode. The device ID of the ECU which is detected as remaining activated is stored in a memory so that any abnormal location may be specified by the stored device ID.

Abstract: A method is provided for a device in a wireless communication network including a base station. The method includes sending a sleep mode request to the base station; and receiving a sleep mode response including negotiating parameters from the base station. The method also includes entering a sleep mode determined by a single power saving class applicable to all traffic conditions between the device and the base station; and communicating with the base station based on the sleep mode. Further, the single power saving class is used to define a frame structure for configuring frames to form alternating listening windows and sleep windows, to define an initial sleep window, and to define a default listening window.

Abstract: While numerous studies have shown that a night of sleep profits memory relative to wake, we still have little understanding about what factors mediate this effect of sleep. A clear understanding of the dynamics of this effect of sleep beyond the initial night of sleep is also lacking. Here, we examined the effect of extrinsic rewards on sleep-dependent declarative memory processing across 12 and 24 hr training-retest intervals. Subjects were either paid based on their performance at retest ($1 for each correct answer), or received a flat fee for participation. After a 12 hr interval we observed pronounced benefits of both sleep and reward on memory. Over an extended 24 hr interval we found 1) that an initial night of sleep partially protects memories from subsequent deterioration during wake, and 2) that sleep blocks further deterioration, and may even have a restorative effect on memory, when it follows a full day of wake. Interestingly, the benefit imparted to rewarded (relative to unrewarded) stimuli was equal for sleep and wake subjects, suggesting that the sleeping brain may not differentially process rewarded information, relative to wake. However, looking at the overall impact of sleep relative to reward in this protocol, it was apparent that sleep both imparted a stronger mnemonic boost than reward, and provided a benefit to memory regardless of whether it occurred in the first or the second 12 hrs following task training.
