TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a sealed digital camera system that eliminates the use of wear items in the case, essentially providing a fully-sealed digital camera, where the camera is protected from exposure to the outside environment during use and the integrity of the case is not degraded during normal operation.
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide a sealed digital camera system that eliminates the use of wear items in the case, essentially providing a fully-sealed digital camera system. As a result, the camera is protected from exposure to the outside environment during use and the integrity of the case is not degraded during normal operation. Unlike conventional systems, the sealed digital camera system of the present invention is not subject to catastrophic failure, even when used under high pressure for extended periods. Use of a high capacity integrated or replaceable storage system and/or battery system with the present invention eliminates the need for a user to access the camera itself. Images taken by the camera can be sent to an external display unit via a suitable transmission link, again without the need to open the case. The present invention provides vast improvements in reliability, ruggedness, maintainability as well as price competitiveness as compared with conventional underwater cameras.

TL;DR: The proposed architecture detects candidate regions of interest using LBP-AdaBoost in the first stage, which offers robustness to false positives in real-time conditions, and design a two-stage architecture which outperforms the aforementioned detectors.
Abstract: Detecting large animals on roadways using automated systems such as robots or vehicles is a vital task. This can be achieved using conventional tools such as ultrasonic sensors, or with innovative technology based on smart cameras. In this paper, we investigate a vision-based solution. We begin the paper by performing a comparative study between three detectors: 1) Haar-AdaBoost; 2) histogram of oriented gradient (HOG)-AdaBoost; and 3) local binary pattern (LBP)-AdaBoost, which were initially developed to detect humans and their faces. These detectors are implemented, evaluated, and compared to each other in terms of accuracy and processing time. Based on our evaluation and comparison results, we design a two-stage architecture which outperforms the aforementioned detectors. The proposed architecture detects candidate regions of interest using LBP-AdaBoost in the first stage, which offers robustness to false positives in real-time conditions. The second stage is based on support vector machine classifiers that were trained using HOG features. The training data are generated from our novel dataset called large animal dataset, which contains common and thermographic images of large road-animals. We emphasize that no such public dataset currently exists.

TL;DR: This work presents a centralized control architecture for assigning PTZ cameras to targets so that the specification is met for any admissible behavior of the targets and proposes a distributed synthesis methodology to decompose the global specification into local specifications for each PTZ camera.
Abstract: We considered the problem of designing control protocols for pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras within a smart camera network where the goal is to guarantee certain temporal logic specifications related to a given surveillance task. We first present a centralized control architecture for assigning PTZ cameras to targets so that the specification is met for any admissible behavior of the targets. Then, in order to alleviate the computational complexity associated with LTL synthesis and to enable implementation of local control protocols on individual PTZ cameras, we propose a distributed synthesis methodology. The main idea is to decompose the global specification into local specifications for each PTZ camera. These decompositions allow the protocols for each camera to be separately synthesized and locally implemented while guaranteeing the global specifications to hold. A thorough design example is presented to illustrate the steps of the proposed procedure.
