TL;DR: It is argued that distributed smart cameras represent key components for future embedded computer vision systems and that smart cameras will become an enabling technology for many new applications.
Abstract: Distributed smart cameras (DSCs) are real-time distributed embedded systems that perform computer vision using multiple cameras. This new approach has emerged thanks to a confluence of simultaneous advances in four key disciplines: computer vision, image sensors, embedded computing, and sensor networks. Processing images in a network of distributed smart cameras introduces several complications. However, we believe that the problems DSCs solve are much more important than the challenges of designing and building a distributed video system. We argue that distributed smart cameras represent key components for future embedded computer vision systems and that smart cameras will become an enabling technology for many new applications. We summarize smart camera technology and applications, discuss current trends, and identify important research challenges.

TL;DR: In this paper, an approach and methods for allowing smart phone users to "capture the moment" by allowing easy access to a camera application when a mobile device is in an above-lock (or locked) mode, while also preventing unauthorized access to other smart phone functionality.
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for allowing smart phone users to “capture the moment” by allowing easy access to a camera application when a mobile device is in an above-lock (or locked) mode, while also preventing unauthorized access to other smart phone functionality. According to one embodiment of the disclosed technology, a method of operating a mobile device having an above-lock state and a below-lock state comprises receiving input data requesting invocation of an camera application when the mobile device is in the above-lock state and invoking the requested camera application on the device, where one or more functions of the requested application are unavailable as a result of the mobile device being in the above-lock state.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for the automation of a multiple camera system based upon the location of a target object in a displayed camera image, which provides a nearly continuous display of a figure as the figure moves about throughout multiple cameras' potential fields of view.
Abstract: The invention provides for the automation of a multiple camera system based upon the location of a target object in a displayed camera image. The preferred system provides a nearly continuous display of a figure as the figure moves about throughout multiple cameras' potential fields of view. When the figure approaches the bounds of a selected camera's field of view, the system determines which other camera's potential field of view contains the figure, and adjusts that other camera's actual field of view to contain the figure. When the figure is at the bounds of the selected camera's field of view, the system automatically selects the other camera. The system also contains predictive location determination algorithms. By assessing the movement of the figure, the system selects and adjusts the next camera based upon the predicted subsequent location of the figure.

TL;DR: A range of computer graphics applications are presented and insights from cinematographic practice are drawn on in identifying their different requirements with regard to camera control, which range from augmented manual control (semi‐automatic) in interactive applications, to fully automated approaches.
Abstract: Recent progress in modelling, animation and rendering means that rich, high fidelity virtual worlds are found in many interactive graphics applications. However, the viewer’s experience of a 3D world is dependent on the nature of the virtual cinematography, in particular, the camera position, orientation and motion in relation to the elements of the scene and the action. Camera control encompasses viewpoint computation, motion planning and editing. We present a range of computer graphics applications and draw on insights from cinematographic practice in identifying their different requirements with regard to camera control. The nature of the camera control problem varies depending on these requirements, which range from augmented manual control (semi-automatic) in interactive applications, to fully automated approaches. We review the full range of solution techniques from constraint-based to optimization-based approaches, and conclude with an examination of occlusion management and expressiveness in the context of declarative approaches to camera control.
