TL;DR: A smart mesh network surveillance system and method for providing communication between a base system having at least one wireless input capture device ICD and other ICDs is presented in this paper.
Abstract: A smart mesh network surveillance system and method for providing communication between a base system having at least one wireless input capture device ICD(s) and other ICD(s), wherein the ICD(s) are capable of smart cross-communication with each other and remote access to their inputs via a server computer, including the steps of providing this base system; at least one user accessing the ICDs and inputs remotely via a user interface through a remote server computer and/or electronic device communicating with it, wherein the captured data is represented visually on a user interface or screen views for the user, the screen views showing 2-dimensional data and corresponding 3-dimensional data of the same input capture with coordinate overlay to provide a geographic context for the captured data.

TL;DR: In this paper, an automated camera control system for television broadcasting at a track-based event, such as horse or motor racing, is described. But this system requires a single operator (54) to simultaneously control a plurality of cameras.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an automated camera control system (10). The automated camera control system (10) is a control management system for television broadcasting at a track based event, such as horse or motor racing. The automated camera control system (10) allows a single operator (54) to simultaneously control a plurality of cameras (16). The automated camera control system (10) improves the compositional quality of the footage. The operator (54) can simultaneously perform all the functions of a director including vision switching and camera setting for the outgoing television broadcast (86).

TL;DR: The article demonstrates the usefulness of heterogeneous System on Chip (SoC) devices in smart cameras used in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and other advanced embedded image processing, analysis and recognition applications.
Abstract: The article demonstrates the usefulness of heterogeneous System on Chip (SoC) devices in smart cameras used in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). In a compact, energy efficient system the following exemplary algorithms were implemented: vehicle queue length estimation, vehicle detection, vehicle counting and speed estimation (using multiple virtual detection lines), as well as vehicle type (local binary features and SVM classifier) and colour (k-means classifier and YCbCr colourspace analysis) recognition. The solution exploits the hardware–software architecture, i.e. the combination of reconfigurable resources and the efficient ARM processor. Most of the modules were implemented in hardware, using Verilog HDL, taking full advantage of the possible parallelization and pipeline, which allowed to obtain real-time image processing. The ARM processor is responsible for executing some parts of the algorithm, i.e. high-level image processing and analysis, as well as for communication with the external systems (e.g. traffic lights controllers). The demonstrated results indicate that modern SoC systems are a very interesting platform for advanced ITS systems and other advanced embedded image processing, analysis and recognition applications.

TL;DR: A resource manager is introduced, which manages and keeps track of the DSP’s on-chip resources like memory utilization, direct memory-access (DMA) channels and interrupts, and applications can be distributed to DSPs with the lowest system load.
Abstract: A smart camera combines video sensing, high-level video processing and communication within a single embedded device. These devices a core components of novel surveillance systems. This paper reports on a heterogeneous smart camera targeting traffic surveillance. It is comprised of a CMOS image-sensor, several digital-signal processors and a network processor. We present its scalable and reconfigurable two-fold software framework, which enables the dynamic allocation of algorithmic tasks (“applications”) to the DSPs. This framework provides middleware-like service like abstraction of data sources and communication channels. We introduce a resource manager, which manages and keeps track of the DSP’s on-chip resources like memory utilization, direct memory-access (DMA) channels and interrupts. Using the resource manager, applications can be distributed to DSPs with the lowest system load. Experiments with our prototype show the system’s usability using an MPEG-4 encoder and a sophisticated videoanalysis algorithm.
