TL;DR: The proposed Dilatation algorithm can be easily implemented in the hardware due to its low complexity, the method can be successful even when using a few numbers of nodes, and in average the system has about 0.5~1 meters of error.
Abstract: Nowadays many systems with diverse technologies such as (GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Ultra Wide Band, Ultrasounds, Infrared, etc) can be used for indoor location. One of the biggest challenges in indoor location systems is to determine the actual indoor position of the user using a smart device (Phone, PC, etc), due to their instability, cost, high-power consumption, low accuracy and low precision. To overcome those problems, we have designed, implemented and emulated an indoor location system based on RSSI (Receive Signal Strength indicator) of the Bluetooth low energy 4.0 (BLE). BLE 4.0 technology is more advantageous in terms of long life expectancy, our approach is based on the deployment of equidistant nodes on the ceiling. The nodes are programmed to broadcast a periodic beacon at a time pace of 400ms and then to enter sleep mode. When a smart device enters within the broadcasting range, it locates the three access points (nodes) with the highest signal strength. This information can be calculated using one of the several localization algorithms (Dilatation). The proposed Dilatation algorithm can be easily implemented in the hardware due to its low complexity, the method can be successful even when using a few numbers of nodes. In average the system has about 0.5 ~ 1 meters of error.

TL;DR: A novel technique for effectively forming and disbanding the groups of vehicles and pedestrians for their communications and the proposed group-based information sharing technology has a good potential to be utilized in V2P, V2V, and P2P communications.
Abstract: The combination of vehicles and mobile computers, such as smartphones and wearable devices, has provided many applications in our daily life. However, it is still limited to the applications in personal use. In fact, by utilizing the device-to-device technologies, which make use of the mobile device resources, vehicle-to-pedestrian (V2P), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), and pedestrian-to-pedestrian (P2P) communications can be more effective and convenient. In this article, we present a concept of relay by smart device that aims at information dissemination by smart communication devices, which can contribute to efficient information sharing among vehicles and pedestrians. We propose a novel technique for effectively forming and disbanding the groups of vehicles and pedestrians for their communications. The proposed mechanism is based on three criteria, namely, the stability of the group, the activity of the group, and the qualification as a group leader. Procedures for group forming and disbanding are introduced. We develop a prototype as a smartphone application using Wi-Fi technology, referred to as the second generation of relay by smartphone, which is the smartphone type of relay by smart device. The results of the field experiment show that the proposed group-based information sharing technology has a good potential to be utilized in V2P, V2V, and P2P communications.

Abstract: This paper presents the Smart Device specification to interface with remote labs. To encourage the broader sharing of remote labs, the Smart Device paradigm decouples the client from the server and provides well-defined interfaces between client and server. Such Smart Device services are exposed on the Internet and enable interoperability with client applications, other Smart Devices and external services (e.g. a booking service). This papers presents the extensible and platform-agnostic specification of the Smart Device services and internal functionalities. The Smart Device specification contains sufficient service metadata to enable the automatic generation of basic client applications. The specification is illustrated through an example and first implementations of the specification are presented.

TL;DR: An improved strategy and practical system to detect driving fatigue based on machine vision and Adaboost algorithm and planted into portable smart device, which could be widely used for driving fatigue detection in daily life.
Abstract: Driving fatigue is one of the most important factors in traffic accidents. In this paper, we proposed an improved strategy and practical system to detect driving fatigue based on machine vision and Adaboost algorithm. Kinds of face and eye classifiers are well trained by Adaboost algorithm in advance. The proposed strategy firstly detects face efficiently by classifiers of front face and deflected face. Then, candidate region of eye is determined according to geometric distribution of facial organs. Finally, trained classifiers of open eyes and closed eyes are used to detect eyes in the candidate region quickly and accurately. The indexes which consist of PERCLOS and duration of closed-state are extracted in video frames real time. Moreover, the system is transplanted into smart device, that is, smartphone or tablet, due to its own camera and powerful calculation performance. Practical tests demonstrated that the proposed system can detect driver fatigue with real time and high accuracy. As the system has been planted into portable smart device, it could be widely used for driving fatigue detection in daily life.

TL;DR: It is shown that it is, indeed, feasible to use low-end smart device capabilities in a cooperative manner to meet application requirements and is considered instantiating this vision in a system called SymbIoT.
Abstract: Smart devices are becoming more powerful with faster processors, larger storage, and different types of communication modalities (e.g., WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular). In the predominant view of Internet of Things (IoT) architecture, all smart devices are expected to communicate with cloud services and/or user-held mobile devices for processing, storage, and user interaction. This architecture heavily taxes Internet bandwidth by moving large volumes of data from the edge to the cloud, and presumes the availability of low-cost, high-performance cloud services that satisfy all user needs. We envision a new approach where all devices within the same network are 1) logically mesh connected either directly through Bluetooth or indirectly through WiFi, and 2) cooperate in a symbiotic fashion to perform different tasks. We consider instantiating this vision in a system we call SymbIoT. We first present the design goals that need to be satisfied in SymbIoT. We then discuss a strawman system's architecture that allows devices to assume different roles based on their capabilities (e.g., processing, storage, and UI). Finally, we show that it is, indeed, feasible to use low-end smart device capabilities in a cooperative manner to meet application requirements.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a system for coupling a radiobeacon to a smart device and in turn to a broader network, where the smart device is configured as a proximity-actuated "community nodal device" by an application that operates as part of the system.
Abstract: Remote actuation of machines or machine systems is realized by a system for coupling a radiobeacon to a smart device and in turn to a broader network. The smart device is configured as a proximity-actuated “community nodal device” by an application that operates as part of the system. The community nodal device is given instructions to function as a “soft switch”: to automatically “upswitch”, amplify, and broadcast low energy, local area radiobeacon “messages” to a cloud-based server, where the message is interpreted according to rules or policies established by an operator, and a command is transmitted for execution to a remote device. Conventional smart devices generally discard data not addressed to the owner of the smart device. Instead of discarding third party messages, the system preempts their handling, and using a soft switch formed from background resources, anonymously, without access to the message by a user interface of the proxy device, and without waiting for a network query from the host, engineers an “upswitched transmission” of radiobeacon-generated data to a cloud host. Advantageously, confidential sharing of ad hoc community resources results in a negligible load on background resources of the community nodal device. Messages may include a sensor data payload. Bit overloading enables a sensor data payload to be compressed into a few hundred bytes or less.

TL;DR: A generic architecture is presented that addresses the identified challenges facing data gathering and processing in this area and is evaluated and demonstrated to demonstrate the novelty of the proposed platform.
Abstract: The deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) smart devices, including sensors, is progressing at a rapid pace. However, the volume of data they generate is becoming difficult to store and process on local platforms. The scalability offered by Cloud computing provides a solution to this problem. Cloud computing provides resources at low cost for its users. However, platform-independent methods of gathering and transmitting sensor data to Clouds are not widely available. This paper presents a Cloud-based smart device data monitoring, gathering and processing platform. It first reviews the state-of-the-art embodied by the existing solutions and discusses their strengths and weaknesses. Informed by the survey analysis, a generic architecture is presented that addresses the identified challenges facing data gathering and processing in this area. Based on use case scenarios, we evaluate and demonstrate the novelty of our proposed platform.

TL;DR: In this article, two types of actuators are simultaneously integrated into a single smart device at opposite ends to achieve cooperated functions in an orderly manner, which realize pH-responsive round-way motions of the smart device and improve the system intelligence for further applications.
Abstract: Smart motions of objects from the submicrometer to millimeter scale through chemical control with stimulus-responsive way are significant to achieve various applications. However, the intelligence of the current devices with chemical responding system remains to be improved; especially, achieving a round-way motion is still a challenge. Therefore, two types of actuators are simultaneously integrated into single smart device at the opposite ends to achieve cooperated functions in an orderly manner. One actuator is the pH-responsive power supply of hydrogen bubbles produced from the reaction between magnesium and HCl. The smart device undergoes on–off–on locomotion through control over the solution pH values by using the pH-responsive actuator of magnesium–HCl system. The other actuator is the hydrogen peroxide-responsive system of oxygen bubbles generated through the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by platinum aggregates. When introducing hydrogen peroxide solution into the system, the generated oxygen bubbles at the opposite end of the device to push the device backward for round-way motions. For the first time, two different types of actuators are simultaneously integrated into single smart device without disturbing each other, which realize pH-responsive round-way motions of the smart device and improve the system intelligence for further applications.

TL;DR: This study has proposed a cross-layer system design for optimizing smart devices’ communication property by utilizing the characteristics of high-speed data transmission rate of Wi-Fi P2P and low power consumption communication of Bluetooth.
Abstract: Recently, due to the popularity of smart devices, a need for various types of wireless communication has been tremendously increasing and several types of radio technologies for easy and quick communication with peripherals have appeared. In order for implementing a Personal Area Network (PAN), low power ZigBee and Bluetooth technologies have been generally used. On the other hand, Wi-Fi Local Area Network (LAN) technology has many advantages in implementing a PAN as it’s chipset is integrated and it’s transmission speed is relatively higher than the others. As the size of multimedia data like photos, videos, and music files has increased, more efficient communication environment for faster connection establishment and higher data transmission speed should be supported for end users accordingly. Because Bluetooth technology has intrincic limitations like transmission speed and coverage, new technologies are expected to provide longer transmission distances and higher transmission rates. Further, if the full functionality of Wi-Fi P2P standard would be implemented for today’s smart devices, it would be possible to provide various kinds of mobile innovative services that could maximize user experience. Transmission rate of Bluetooth technology in early stages was only up to 1Mbps. Although this speed is as fast as 6-fold compared to existing techniques, Bluetooth can hardly support a satisfied level of services to transfer large amounts of data such as high quality musics and videos. Therefore, Bluetooth has been used only for specific communication services with limitations. Transmission speed of Bluetooth, however, has been significantly improved as time goes. That is, Bluetooth 2.0 released in 2004 supports maximum speed of 3Mbps, and Bluetooth 3.0 released in 2 009 supports up to 24Mbps. Bluetooth 4.0 released in 2 010 has low energy mode while maintaing 24Mbps and also supports coin cell with low power consumptioin. Wi-Fi P2P is a direct communication technology between terminals without any intermediate devices such as routers and access point (AP). Wi-Fi module is basically mounted on most of smart devices. Therefore, once Wi-Fi P2P technology is adapted to mobile terminals or mobile devices such as TV, laptop, printer, and camera, all the communication services and multimedia contents can be simply provided for these devices by using the Wi-Fi P2P. In this study, we have proposed a cross-layer system design for optimizing smart devices’ communication property by utilizing the characteristics of high-speed data transmission rate of Wi-Fi P2P and low power consumption communication of Bluetooth. We have also verified that the proposed technique outperforms the existing Bluetooth and Wi-Fi P2P in the comparison of throughput as well as transmission delay through OPNET simulations, which leads to faster user connections and provides better quality of services to end users.
