TL;DR: This work provides energy prosumers and consumers with a decentralized market platform for trading local energy generation without the need of a central intermediary and presents a preliminary economic evaluation of the market mechanism and a research agenda for the technological evaluation of blockchain technology as the local energy market’s main information and communication technology.
Abstract: The increasing amount of renewable energy sources in the energy system calls for new market approaches to price and distribute the volatile and decentralized generation. Local energy markets, on which consumers and prosumers can trade locally produced renewable generation directly within their community, balance generation and consumption locally in a decentralized approach. We present a comprehensive concept, market design and simulation of a local energy market between 100 residential households. Our approach is based on a distributed information and communication technology, i.e. a private blockchain, which underlines the decentralized nature of local energy markets. Thus, we provide energy prosumers and consumers with a decentralized market platform for trading local energy generation without the need of a central intermediary. Furthermore, we present a preliminary economic evaluation of the market mechanism and a research agenda for the technological evaluation of blockchain technology as the local energy market’s main information and communication technology.

TL;DR: The mathematical formulation of the incremental cost consensus algorithm, which is able to solve the conventional centralized economic dispatch problem in a distributed manner, and the results of several case studies show that the difference between network topologies will influence the convergence rate of the ICC algorithm.
Abstract: In a smart grid, effective distributed control algorithms could be embedded in distributed controllers to properly allocate electrical power among connected buses autonomously. By selecting the incremental cost of each generation unit as the consensus variable, the incremental cost consensus (ICC) algorithm is able to solve the conventional centralized economic dispatch problem in a distributed manner. The mathematical formulation of the algorithm has been presented in this paper. The results of several case studies have also been presented to show that the difference between network topologies will influence the convergence rate of the ICC algorithm.

TL;DR: A novel consensus based algorithm to solve EDP in a distributed fashion, where the quadratic cost functions are adopted in the problem formulation, and the strongly connected communication topology is used for the information exchange.
Abstract: Economic dispatch problem (EDP) is an important class of optimization problems in the smart grid, which aims at minimizing the total cost when generating certain amount of power. In this work, a novel consensus based algorithm is proposed to solve EDP in a distributed fashion. The quadratic convex cost functions are assumed in the problem formulation, and the strongly connected communication topology is sufficient for the information exchange. Unlike centralized approaches, the proposed algorithm enables generators to collectively learn the mismatch between demand and total amount of power generation. The estimated mismatch is then used as a feedback mechanism to adjust current power generation by each generator. With a tactical initial setup, eventually, all generators can automatically minimize the total cost in a collective sense.

TL;DR: An application-oriented review of smart meter data analytics identifies the key application areas as load analysis, load forecasting, and load management and reviews the techniques and methodologies adopted or developed to address each application.
Abstract: The widespread popularity of smart meters enables an immense amount of fine-grained electricity consumption data to be collected. Meanwhile, the deregulation of the power industry, particularly on the delivery side, has continuously been moving forward worldwide. How to employ massive smart meter data to promote and enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the power grid is a pressing issue. To date, substantial works have been conducted on smart meter data analytics. To provide a comprehensive overview of the current research and to identify challenges for future research, this paper conducts an application-oriented review of smart meter data analytics. Following the three stages of analytics, namely, descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics, we identify the key application areas as load analysis, load forecasting, and load management. We also review the techniques and methodologies adopted or developed to address each application. In addition, we also discuss some research trends, such as big data issues, novel machine learning technologies, new business models, the transition of energy systems, and data privacy and security.

TL;DR: A new grid synchronization method for three-phase three-wire networks, namely dual second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) frequency-locked loop, based on two adaptive filters, is presented, able to perform an excellent estimation of the instantaneous symmetrical components of the grid voltage under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions.
Abstract: Grid synchronization algorithms are of great importance in the control of grid-connected power converters, as fast and accurate detection of the grid voltage parameters is crucial in order to implement stable control strategies under generic grid conditions. This paper presents a new grid synchronization method for three-phase three-wire networks, namely dual second-order generalized integrator (SOGI) frequency-locked loop. The method is based on two adaptive filters, implemented by using a SOGI on the stationary αβ reference frame, and it is able to perform an excellent estimation of the instantaneous symmetrical components of the grid voltage under unbalanced and distorted grid conditions. This paper analyzes the performance of the proposed synchronization method including different design issues. Moreover, the behavior of the method for synchronizing with highly unbalanced grid is proven by means of simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its excellent performance.
