TL;DR: This paper studied EV charging scheduling problems from a customer's perspective by jointly considering the aggregator's revenue and customers' demands and costs and presents linear programming (LP)-based optimal schemes for the static problems and effective heuristic algorithms for the dynamic problems.
Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) are considered to be a promising solution for current gas shortage and emission problems. To maximize the benefits of using EVs, regulated and optimized charging control needs to be provided by load aggregators for connected vehicles. An EV charging network is a typical cyber-physical system, which includes a power grid and a large number of EVs and aggregators that collect information and control the charging procedure. In this paper, we studied EV charging scheduling problems from a customer's perspective by jointly considering the aggregator's revenue and customers' demands and costs. We considered two charging scenarios: static and dynamic. In the static charging scenario, customers' charging demands are provided to the aggregator in advance; however, in the dynamic charging scenario, an EV may come and leave at any time, which is not known to the aggregator in advance. We present linear programming (LP)-based optimal schemes for the static problems and effective heuristic algorithms for the dynamic problems. The dynamic scenario is more realistic; however, the solutions to the static problems can be used to show potential revenue gains and cost savings that can be brought by regulated charging and, thus, can serve as a benchmark for performance evaluation. It has been shown by extensive simulation results based on real electricity price and load data that significant revenue gains and cost savings can be achieved by optimal charging scheduling compared with an unregulated baseline approach, and moreover, the proposed dynamic charging scheduling schemes provide close-to-optimal solutions.

TL;DR: This paper presents a co-optimization formulation of the generation unit commitment and transmission switching problem while ensuring N-1 reliability, and shows that the optimal topology of the network can vary from hour to hour.
Abstract: Currently, there is a national push for a smarter electric grid, one that is more controllable and flexible. The full control of transmission assets are not currently built into electric network optimization models. Optimal transmission switching is a straightforward way to leverage grid controllability: to make better use of the existing system and meet growing demand with existing infrastructure. Previous papers have shown that optimizing the network topology improves the dispatch of electrical networks. Such optimal topology dispatch can be categorized as a smart grid application where there is a co-optimization of both generators and transmission topology. In this paper we present a co-optimization formulation of the generation unit commitment and transmission switching problem while ensuring N-1 reliability. We show that the optimal topology of the network can vary from hour to hour. We also show that optimizing the topology can change the optimal unit commitment schedule. This problem is large and computationally complex even for medium sized systems. We present decomposition and computational approaches to solving this problem. Results are presented for the IEEE RTS 96 test case.

TL;DR: The design of a low complexity fuzzy logic controller of only 25-rules to be embedded in an energy management system for a residential grid-connected microgrid including renewable energy sources and storage capability is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents the design of a low complexity fuzzy logic controller of only 25-rules to be embedded in an energy management system for a residential grid-connected microgrid including renewable energy sources and storage capability. The system assumes that neither the renewable generation nor the load demand is controllable. The main goal of the design is to minimize the grid power profile fluctuations while keeping the battery state of charge within secure limits. Instead of using forecasting-based methods, the proposed approach use both the microgrid energy rate-of-change and the battery state of charge to increase, decrease, or maintain the power delivered/absorbed by the mains. The controller design parameters (membership functions and rule-base) are adjusted to optimize a pre-defined set of quality criteria of the microgrid behavior. A comparison with other proposals seeking the same goal is presented at simulation level, whereas the features of the proposed design are experimentally tested on a real residential microgrid implemented at the Public University of Navarre.

TL;DR: This paper presents a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to provide optimal solutions as well as a simple polynomial-time heuristic algorithm based on LP rounding, and demonstrates how to integrate the proposed scheduling approach in real-time charging operations.
Abstract: The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that are currently under development for future smart grid systems can enable load aggregators to have bidirectional communications with both the grid and Electric Vehicles (EVs) to obtain real-time price and load information, and to adjust EV charging schedules in real time. In addition, Energy Storage (ES) can be utilized by the aggregator to mitigate the impact of uncertainty and inaccurate prediction. In this paper, we study a problem of scheduling EV charging with ES from an electricity market perspective with joint consideration for the aggregator energy trading in the day-ahead and real-time markets. We present a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to provide optimal solutions as well as a simple polynomial-time heuristic algorithm based on LP rounding. In addition, we present a communication protocol for interactions among the aggregator, the ES, the power grid, and EVs, and demonstrate how to integrate the proposed scheduling approach in real-time charging operations. Extensive simulation results based on real electricity price and load data have been presented to justify the effectiveness of the proposed approach and to show how several key parameters affect its performance.
